Laser eye surgery, tattoos
on: August 28, 2005, 07:15:29 AM
Ok, my eyesight is poor.  I'm thinking of getting laser eye surgery having heard nothing but good things?  At this point in it's evolution is it possible to tell the long time effects? Any personal experience with this?

Ok, I'm thinking of getting a whole bunch of tattoos, but one place that I'm concerned about is on the forearm, specifically on the underside between your wrist and elbow?  Could this damage the tendons underneath/ I think not, but would love to hear opinions.

thanks

im in the same boat, with the eye stuff.

cant say about tattoos because i think they are a bit  :-X

now, the technology is improving all the time with the eye ting, and the prices and safety are getting better all the time.

yes its permanent, i think, but there is like a 0.1% chance that youll be ****ed.

this is why they do 1 eye at atime, just in case one doesnt work out.

anyway, im not getting it done for a long while, im starting to realise having glasses will be less and less common and nerdy looking guys will become a rare thing.

and yes, for some reason lots of girls(all girls) love nerdy looking guys!

as a mom, my advice would be that you don't want people to get the wrong 'first impression.'  it can damage your ability to get jobs you want (although they may not tell you).  cause the wrong people to hang out with you - thus encouraging you to go down a different life path.  and, generally, make you feel bad about yourself later (and wish that you could remove it without all the pain).

just get your eyes done, ok.  then, go to one of those high falutin' stores (that would cost the same as major tatooing) and buy yourself an armani suit or something.  you could use this for recital.  or, just some casual clothes.  it's amazing how small things (as the way you present yourself) cause a chain of events.

I had an interesting conversation with a friend about this topic the other day. We are both in our 50's looking forward to retiring.

He was at a party at his neighbor's the other week, and the neighbor's son always dresses "interestingly:" Spiked hair in multiple colors, lots of black and leather. No tattos, however. The neighbor's son walked up to him and said,

"My parents hate the way I look. What do you think?"

(sound of door opening here)

"Since you asked, I'll tell you. I really don't care how you look. It doesn't affect me, and it never will. It's your body and your choices to live with.

I will however, tell you what the way you look tells me.

There are many silly things that we do to be accepted by society. Neckties is one of those things. I hate neckties. They're silly, useless pieces of decoration that serve no purpose and are full of expense and maintenence. However, my clients expect me to be wearing one, because if I'm not, it says something about me and my relationship with society. It says that I understand that, though a necktie is silly, I'm willing to wear one - if that's what's required of me.

Now, what does the way that you look tell me?

It says that  you're not mature enough to join our society - yet - because you strive for individualism in a way that is not (yet) socially acceptable."

Having written that, I have to add that if that kid's parent had said that, he would have blown them off.

In two weeks the color of the hair was natural, and the clothes were not as "outspoken."

Another piece of advice. Do whatever you want to your body - just don't make it permanent. I've seen (in my job) many, many tattoos. I've seen good tattoos, bad tattoos, old tattoos, new tattoos.

I have never seen a good, old tattoo.

For the tattoo thing, I have exactly what you said, between the elbow and wrist of my right forearm. It didn't damage anything, my playing remained unaltered. People barely see it when Im moving, walking etc, but when Im playing it is quite obvious. Im not a rebellious teenager and I didnt do this do spite my parents or society as George K mentioned in his example. It is a very meaningful drawing to me (its a Yung-sob Yi drawing made before the 50s in korea, while he was forced to live on the streets and draw on cigarrette packs). And, Im saying this with the utmost sincerity and candid thoughts, I don't give a f*ck about people's pre-judgements. And also, we are living on the 21st century, whenever someone notices my tatto, instead of giving me a dirty look they come up to me interested, wanting to talk (of course, dont go and tattoo a skull or summin heh).

george is right, imo.  a chain smoking street guy on a man's arm would make me think he's a druggie or something.  you can be casual and comfortable (even if you don't wear neckties) and yet attract people instead of repel them.  this is what you want to do in business.

old tattoos sound kinda ugly, too.

Think about it -- in 40, 50 years, will you really still like your tatoo?????

And about laser surgery, it can be good, but it can have very bad effects and be dangerous.  I heard somebody on Leno saying "never, ever get laser surgery" because she had it and was miserable for weeks after.

check the references for your doctor.  you don't want to be blind and tattooed.

LOL so true!

Does anyone read the Sunday Times magazine? I love the little comical stories they have near the beginning. Well, the story the other week was that this man had a tattoo somewhere on his leg which said "I love women" (yeah stupid tattoo that's what i thought), and then he had to have major heart surgery to save his life. This involved the surgeon taking part of a vein/artery from this guy's leg to put into his heart (ok i don't know the exact details) anyway the surgeon sewed his leg back up and his tattoo then read "I love men"! Apparently the guy was realy annoyed with the surgeon - but at the end of the day the surgeon was trying to save his life! It's his fault for having a stupid tattoo.

My mum is a nurse and she knows a few midwives. They have told her that they have so many young(ish) girls who have tattoos on their lower belly/stomach - you remember when all that was fashionable a few years back? (Think Spice Girls era.....eugh) Then when they get pregnant - which causes their tattoos to stretch as their baby grows, they then give birth and are left with a disfugured tattoo which looks awful.

I really can't stand tattoos, i think they are ugly - why don't you just scrawl on your skin with a biro?! Plus i'm totally squeamish so i wouldn't be able to stand the pain even if i wanted one. The body is a beautiful thing as it is.

As for laser eye surgery my mum works in the opthamology unit (eyes) where she assists in laser eye surgery (amongst other operations) she seems pretty positive about it. The surgeon who does the surgery in our area is apparently fantastic - a genius - let me add he's an NHS surgeon too...going private isn't always the best option i guess.

Being squeamish i've given laser eye surgery a thought but decided i would wait a few years until i can afford it and by then hopefully there will be less and less chance of it going wrong. Plus - ever considered contact lenses? I started wearing the monthly disposable ones about 2 years ago and they are fantastic. Ok so they can irritate your eyes a little at the end of the day - particulary if they are nearing a month old, but overall i forget i'm wearing them most the time. They are so comfortable, i really can't stand wearing my glasses anymore as i'm constantly aware of how bad my eye sight has become, it's depressing...

My nephew's suggested rule for tattoos: never get a tattoo until you have wanted the same thing, in the same place, for five years.

A friend of mine had laser eye surgery and her night vision is now worse (maybe this is less common these days). Also, there was this guy on Mount Everest and because of the extremely low air pressure, his (lasered) eyeballs swelled up or something and he was temporarily blinded. Perhaps you'll never be in that position, though...

That reminds me of a friend whos kids want to quit playing the piano (how's that for a musical segue?). He told them,

"You play until you go to high school, or you can find an adult who's glad that s/he quit.[/i]" So far, they've had no luck finding such a person!

I have this idea with tattoos that they are supposed to be spur of the moment, and of course you're not going to like them in 40 50 years!
Even within a year you may lose interest it, but it's symbolic of a point in your life.  Its a 'commerative scar' of  or put less nicely a constant reminder of the person/idiot? you once were. And that's the beauty of them.  But i am thinking of getting  a skull somewhere...maybe less visible than the forearm.  I was thinking of getting some tribal stuff on the forearm, maybe a big ass treble cleff on the other one like Chingy.  Or maybe whatever I feel like at the time.

And I heard yea you have  to wear glasses at night with laser eye surgery.  Maybe contacts would be better

Hey, eye surgery freaks me out man. There's a big success rate, but I'd be scared coz for some reason if it doesn't go right, I'd hate to go blind!

About the tattoo thing, should be ok about not wrecking tendons. I dunno.... I personally wouldn't take that chance. And, I'd probably be self-conscious about my tattoo, in case I ever get the opportunity to play a major concert somewhere outdoors, and I get to wear a short sleeve shirt (as opposed to the committed tux attire) I don't want the conservative audience to see it... so I may not get it done on my stage arm.

Laser eye surgery - I'd never do it.  I prefer my glasses or my contact lenses, because my faulty vision can be fixed by them.  But if the laser surgery goes wrong, I could end up with defective vision which no glasses or contact lenses could ever fix.
