Anyone from the UK - Piece ID
on: August 31, 2005, 12:46:33 AM
Hey everyone,
First up, I have an almost none exsistent knowledge of the piano rep. Iv been playing only about 7 - 8 months.
I watched a great documentary on BBC 1 about a months ago, which investigated the life on the concert pianist. It included several interview, including Lang Lang and Kissin. However, it also features some footage of students practicing at Juilliard.
Did anyone see this?
Could you possibly tell me the name of the piece that the young Chinese girl was practicing at Juilliard? The fortage began with some hard descending octaves / chords, then went into some low ascending runs (fast). Probably late classical.
Anyone know the piece? Its probably really obvious, as Iv heard it many times before but dont know the name / composer.
Thanks guys!

Excellent, thanks stevie.
Yeah, that Kissin was pretty cool. He seemed to be using an unusually curved finger action on that one too! Maybe this is the new way to do staccato?

Just had a listen to the first movement. Fantastic piece, I love the start. Guess I was a bit off the with the date!
One day I shall play this perfectly (and then I'll wake up
)

yep, one of my favourite concertos, my favourite recording is cziffra's live unreleased from about 1962, all other recordings sound dull and unemotional by comparison.
its a shame its not commercially available..
and about kissin's technique...its not advisable to copy what he does, his technique is quite idiosyncratic...it screwed up many young pianists' technique trying to copy horowitz's flat-fingered style too.
kissin's is quite the opposite, it works for him, but it probably wouldnt work for us...
anyway im still wanting to know the piece that he played, any help?

Oh no Stevie, my technique is purely my own (and not in a good way
). I dont think I emulate anothers even if i tried - my rebelious digitals wouldnt have it, lol/
Yeah, Id be most interested to know myself the name of that piece as well.
