What edition of the Rach Preludes should I buy?
on: September 04, 2005, 02:31:47 AM
I'm going to buy the Rach preludes because I think I'm ready for them (or at least a few of them). My friend who is very into Rachmaninoff suggested Schirmer but I have issues with Schirmer. I just can't stand it. I like Henle and Peters the best, probably followed by Kalmus and those editions in red-orange with the composers' signatures on the front. Any suggestions?

The editions with the composer's signature on the front are from the ABRSM. They're very good, but as far as I know they don't do an edition of Rachmaninoff preludes. I have the Boosey & Hawkes complete preludes (it's this book, to be precise), which is likewise very good. I don't know Schirmer's edition, but if it's as ugly compared to B&H's as the Schirmer website is, I'd definitely go for the B&H. ;) It also has the D# in bar 6 of op3 no.2, which I count as a point in its favour :P

In my own defense, I'll remind you that I also recommended B&H and Alfred. I just said that I happen to own Alfred and Schirmer and prefer the Schirmer.
