Randomly, I dropped out of school
on: September 05, 2005, 05:15:32 AM
I feel like an idiot.  What should I do?

Briefly, I failed pretty much everything except my applied music (piano), which I got a decent mark in.  My parents told me it's stupid for me to continue, so I'm "taking a year off."  ***!  Randomly, it's not the end of the world, but any suggestions on what the hell I should do now?  ***. I'm still gonna take lessons with my teacher, (although less than if I were enrolled), and hopefully enter a couple competitions...but it's the whole academic thing.  ***!!!!!!
incidentally, I was technically enterting 4th year, yet still taking 2nd year history and theory. It's not that I didn't care, I just..according to my folks "couldn't be bothered"... don't worry I'm not depressed but I'd love to hear your thoughts, thanks.

sorry.  ::)

No advice, but just be aware that if you're dropping out now, you're probably not  going to go back for a long long time, if ever.  Not that there's anything wrong with that necessarily.

Get a job  :)

Boy this is a tough post for me to read, considering I had the exact opposite problem!

My parents wouldn't let me major in music, so I did computers instead.  I have had "lucrative" jobs ever since and have always hated it.  I am now trying to figure out how to catch up and go back to music school!

Maybe a year off is a good thing - especially if you get a job of some kind. The ghost of Christmas future should come visit you!  You may realize that busting butt in music theory and history for a couple of years isn't so bad!
So much music, so little time........

SH is right. School is overrated. So are jobs. Instead, go travelling (the world). :D

Good luck.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

i personally though..am investing most all my efforts into school..theres nothing like diplomas, certifications. and degrees to secure you throughout life (assuming all these credentials are in desirable and functional fields)

It looks to me that your are lacking one big thing: goals. If you had a goal in mind you would know exactly what to do and how to do it. So, try to figure out what you want to do later in life. There is nothing wrong with taking some time off to think things over. Yes, go travel the world for a while, there is hardly anything more stimulating than that. Although it might later be hard to get back in again, as mentioned before, if you do have a good goal in mind, you will get back in.

Schools are indeed overrated, but only if one doesn't apply what one has learned towards a higher purpose. On the other hand, they are utterly underrated if it later turns out that one could have acquired know-how that allows one to move ahead in life, or in general, acquire tools to realize one's goals.

As everything in life, it helps to know what one wants to do and why. How it's done will follow automatically.

Good luck!

Take gen eds.

Get a part time job, take something that still contribes towards your degree (gen eds), and continue studying piano.

Get some math books and some major literature and work on that, or something.

But why are you quitting? Shouldn't you try again or a different school. I am not sure what you are studing, maybe study something else.

this is tertiary education school right? in which case i have nothing against dropping out, there are so many people who do it, and if you're not enjoying it then why do it? taking some time off to work out what you love and what you want to do is fine. get a job, earn some money and go travelling. but frankly, people who can't be bothered at uni, i'm like why are you here? but yeah, maybe when you've had some time off you might get yourself organised and give it another go. i have a friend who dropped out of uni only a semester into it, so then she went and set up her own graphic design business and is off designing all this crazy stuff for people and doing pretty well for herself.

Well.................I wan't allowed to study art and music so went to school to be an engineer.............yep, stayed a whole 2 semesters.  The gifted math student crashed and burned.  Got married, enlisted in the military and learned a few valuable lessons.  Yes, money is a necessary thing!  A job does wonders to get it too.  A vocation is not your life.  You are much more than that.  Maybe you should get an education to qualify for a job and still use your spare time to work on your music?  I used the military to pay for the college, followed on in theprivate sector with the same job I had in the military.  The bills get paid, my job is OK, though not what I live for, and I have the capability to apply myself towards whatever hobbies I have.  What am I?, not my job as an air traffic controller, I am an artist and a musician, just not by trade.
