Important, please help. An Die Musik.
on: September 09, 2005, 03:17:26 AM
Hi all,

I just learned a very close friend of mine is terminally ill and I want to give him a transcription of An Die Musik (a song by Schubert).

First question is do you know whether such transcription exists?  If you have this transcription and it is in the public domain I woul dgladly appreciate your posting it.  if not in the public domain, please let me know where I can obtain and I will.

Second, in case you have the vocal score, for my purposes I could very quickly arrange it myself.  I don't have access to a library that would have it, but will go to Amazon to get it.  In the meantime, if you do have it, same as above.

Thanks and sorry to bring this sad episode to this otherwise so happy place.

Thanks.

I searched my own library, but couldn't find it :(

https://www.sheetmusicnow.com/title.asp?tid=62380

There you can buy the vocal+piano version.

I found the vocal score on Amazon, will get here shortly.  All that is left of my question is whether you know of any pre-existing transcription.

I have decided I will make one myself in any case.  It appears there isn't one by either Liszt nor Godowsky.

Du holde Kunst, in wieviel grauen Stunden,
Wo mich des Lebens wilder Kreis umstrickt,
Hast du mein Herz zu warmer Lieb entzunden,
Hast mich in eine beßre Welt entrückt!

Oft hat ein Seufzer, deiner Harf' entflossen,
Ein süßer, heiliger Akkord von dir
Den Himmel beßrer Zeiten mir erschlossen,
Du holde Kunst, ich danke dir dafür!

My German in unexistent, but the short of it is:  Thank you, music, for the happiness you gave me in life.  I know when my own end becomes near, this is a message will resonate with me, and I believe it will resonate with him.

Very nice poem and very fitting, I am sure.

Here is a rough translation I just came up with:

Oh sweet music, in so many dreary moments,
when life's vexations had me entangled,
my heart you filled with warm love,
to a better world you took me!

Often a sigh, emerging from your harp,
a sweet and holy chord,
revealed to me the most heavenly moments,
Oh sweet music, I will be eternally grateful!
