A daft question for all you technology geeks out there
on: September 17, 2005, 04:08:31 PM
OK...I have a laptop, and need some help. Say I'm sittin in the cafe or on the train and I wanna connect to the internet...what do I need to do this? Is there a cardbus adapter or something that I can use to connect the the internet remotely/wirelessly? How much does the average thing cost? this might seem like a kinda stupid question but I'm not the most technologically informed person in the world!
Any help you can offer would be much appreciated!
Many thanks,
Chris

few ways you can accomplish this.
but most of this requires a wireless connection.
and a large portion of it depends on the services the train provides.
situation 1)
Train supplies you with either
a) a wireless access point which you can access to get to the internet.
b) a physical connection to something which can access the internet.
both cases require the train to actually HAVE a connection to the internet in the first place.
situation 2)
Train doesn't supply you with connection.
You'll have to make do with a phone modem.
WHat you'll need
a) wap/3g/gprs phone that can connect to the internet. It must also have a means of connecting to your computer either thorugh
-bluetooth
-usb
-infrared etc
b) a subcription to a service provider providing you with this internet service.
then its a "SIMPLE" matter of getting your computer to use yourmobile phone as a modem to access the internet. This also depends on whehter you can connect to your service provider on the train (rare in rural areas)
SIMPLE = i wish you the best of luck.

(if there's any easier way... well... by all means haha)

lol...many thanks...just had a long frustratingly confusing chat with a friend of mne about it and i think its mostly clear now!!!
I have a wireless lan adapter, so I can connect to routers in cafes/my uni library...hopefully that should be enough to suit my purposes for now...if not i'll have to think about getting an infrared PCMCIA card for my phone.
Many thanks,
Chris
