Mussorgsky Night on Bare Mountain is AWESOME!!!
on: September 19, 2005, 04:43:48 AM
Just thought I mention this piece, which is not talked about very often here although Im sure most of you know it.  Its incredible piece, such excitement!

btw, i was listening to Berezovsky's recording, and there were many changes to the score I was listening with, anyone know if there are different versions of this piece?

There's Mussorgksy's original but the one most played today is the version 'cleaned up' by Rimsky Korsakov.  (that devil monster thing in fantasia is fricken scary)

Both 'bare' and 'bald' are used.

The piano version is the  original, but the orchestral version (Rimsky Korsakov) is by far the most commonly performed. If you haven't heard it before, I would recommend it.

Sorry, I'm a little confused, did Rimsky Korsakov make a version for piano? or just the orchestral version?

Do you guys know which one Berezovsky recorded? or did he just added/omited them himself?

I am not aware of a version by Ravel. Could it be that you are thinking of the Pictures At An Exhbition, which, indeed, Ravel wrote the orchestration for?

and, i might add, very well!  of all the pieces in romantic literature besides the 1812 overture, this piece makes my year when i hear it (pictures at an exhibition).  night on bare/bald mountain is the same.  so much percussion.  cool orchestration by rimsky.

I don't know this score, but it sounds like this Tchernow guy made a piano reduction of the orchestral version by Rimsky-Korsakov to aid study of that version. The version Berezovsky's undoubtibly playing is really by Mussorgsky, just as he wrote it for the piano. Why Tchernow felt the need to make a piano reduction, I have no idea, sounds like he had too much time on his hands. And yes, it is an awesome piece.

People used to make piano reductions of orchestral scores before recordings came in so they could play through them at home - perhaps that's the reason.
I'm not exactly sure Mussorgky wrote a piano version, the orchestral version is definitaly the best known.

AFAIK, Mussorgsky only wrote the piano version. He never orchestrated it. So, Rimsky-Korsakov didn't "clean it up", he simply orchestrated it. But I could be wrong.

That's it! I read the CD notes of the berezovsky recording, and its says the version that is played is by Konstantin Tchernov.

It also says that the work was originally scored for orchestra....? so it was originally written for orchestra not piano by Mussorgsky? that does make more sense... if it was already written for piano, why would this Tchernov transcribe it again for piano? it wouldnt really be a transciption, just a "improved" version.  can someone please clarify?

By the way, do you have the Tchernov score in pdf format that you could send me or upload? I would really appreciate it.

Sorry about my earlier misinformation. Night on a Bare Mountain was originally scored by Mussorgsky for orchestra, but Balakirev didn't like it, and Mussorgsky asked Rimsky for helped on the orchestration. After Mussorgsky died, Rimsky completed edited and re-orchestrated to piece, saving much of the original music in a rearranged format. The Rimsky version is almost always the one performed, although like many of Mussorgsky's orchestral music, the original version is coming back into fashion. I once heard Boris Godunov in the original orchestration and liked it very much, so I wonder how the original orchestration would sound. Apparently, Mussorgsky considered reworking it as a piece for piano and orchestra, that would have been interesting.
