Looking for a 20th century competition piece
on: September 22, 2005, 02:20:42 AM
I'm wanting something that will stand out enough to grab the judges, but at the same time, something lyrical, or thematic that I'll like. I'm a classical/romantic genre lover...so it's hard for me to find 20th cent. pieces that I'm wild about. Let me know if you have suggestions.

Iunno, try Reflets dans l'eau from Images by Debussy... I love listening to it, it has it's moments, and is a beautiful piece.
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

If you like lyrical, try Mompou or Poulenc.  <--- neither are as overplayed as Debussy in competition.  I think you'd really like the following:

Poulenc - Presto in B-flat major    or
             - Melancolie     or
             - Francaise

Mompou - 3 Pessebres

You can search for them on Amazon and listen to audio snippets from the CDs.  Good luck!

"Malambo" by Alberto Ginastera.  It's exciting! ;)
