Sorabji's Toccata from "Two Piano Pieces"
on: September 23, 2005, 10:35:55 PM
Lately I've gotten the urge to learn another piece by Sorabji. I figured that the Toccata from the set of "Two Piano Pieces" (the other one is In The Hothouse) would be the best, because then I would be able to play the complete set.

Unfortunately, I do not have a recording of this piece, and do not know where to aquire one (other than the Sorabji Archive, I suppose, the only problem being that the process for buying music from them seems to be a bit more involved than buying music from, say, amazon.com) and I don't know the speed at which it's supposed to be played. The sheetmusic does not have a metronome marking. If anybody could tell me what the exact tempo is, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have the Michael Habermann recording, and he plays the piece in 3:30.   I'm not sure what the equivalent tempo would be as I don't have the sheet music.

Some of us do find that Sorabji's music is worth the effort to learn.

Sorabji used a metronome marking only once in his entire composing career. Michael Habermann's tempo seems perfectly reasonable.

Buying music from us is easy; you email us an order, we'll quote you a price including airmailing (if you are outside UK), you send us a cheque (if you are within UK) or a PayPal payment (if you are elsewhere) and we'll prepare and despatch your order promptly. We can't send that recording, however, as we only sell CDs on the Altarus label.

Please note the Sorabji Archive will be closed from tomorrow for three weeks.

Best,

The only music worth learning.

Sorabji, is out of this world. I have never heard such amazing much. Nothing has ever moved me as his pieces have. If I were good enough I would play Sorabji 24/7

I also have Habermann's recording of the Toccata, although I don't listen to it often, I find that the instruments he uses annoying to listen to, but the toccata itself is a very interesting piece.

I have recently aquired the Habermann recording. His playing is quite sloppy, but I find the piece enjoyable to listen to. I'm finding that it's coming to me more easily than I thought it would.
