easy romantics reccomendations *urgent*..kinda lol
on: September 25, 2005, 10:43:31 AM
just took up ajob entertaining some shoppers at a mall..

need some easy romantic or semi-depressive pieces grade 8 and under..but higher level suggestions are welcome..maybe some slow beethoven movements

right nows all i play is this
chop noc 9/2
chop noc posthemous no 2 c# minor
chop prelude no 4
chop prelude no 20
beethoven pathetique 2nd movement (finishing this up) (i cheat and play the grave before this to add some time to the piece  ;) )
beethoven moonlight 1st mov
beethoven moonlight 2nd mov
mozart sonata k545 1st mov
mozart sonata k515 2nd mov
bach WTC c major prelude
fur elise (only first part cause i know it'll be requested)

this is all i can play from memory...i'v only been playing for 9 months so my repertoire isnt nearly good enough for performing in public but i simply cant pass up this opportunity..

once im done cleaningup the chopin noc. posthemous no 2 and pathetique 2nd im starting claire de lune and liszt lieberstraum no 3..maybe valse brillante op 34 no 2...i need some more ideas..maybe some easy bartok?...i want to keep more of a romantic 20th cent atmosphere..although classical and baroque are welcome....thanx for the input guys

You'll probably get people asking you to play stairway to heaven :)

Does the job desc specify only classical? If not, why not consider a few pieces that are more classics than classical?

Make sure you take a big tip jar with a few notes / coins already in the bottom :)

actually..the lady..well..my new boss i suppose..was really cool about it..i can pretty much play anything i like..the only other pianists that go are strictly jazz and blues improv..and she said it was really really nice having a change of mood...this is why i'd like to stick with romantic and classical...most modern radio quality..or blues/jazz have already been covered..and i dont want to fall prey to redundancy..

try the brahms intermezzo op118 no.2 in A major its a lovely piece. if you can, also try the liszt leibestraumme no.3 and if possible the HR2. everyone will love that (especially kids who've seen tom and jerry) :)
You either do or do not. There is no try- Yoda

You should get a book of opera tunes; I use one called "Opera for Piano", they're kind of hard, I think I've seen "Easy Opera for Piano", most sheet music stores (not guitar stores!) have these collections. You can always make the easy arrangements more complicated. Remember you are not in school or at a piano competition so all that matters is to play well and make comforting sonic mood patterns for the lady shoppers. Difficulty is not an issue, as long as it sounds "real", not simplified. If they are happy with you, your boss will be happy too!  :D Opera is hip with the upper end shoppers who patronize Nordstrums. The rich ladies love it, makes them feel cultured . Who knows, maybe they will get that way... :P

Hey congratulations Husky! You have pulled off quite a coup, LOTS of pianists want these jobs and you were in the right place at the right time... 8) Proving once again that timing is everything, and that no amount of work or practice or schmoozing or pounding the pavement will ever replace DUMB LUCK.... ;D

Get the single copy sheet music today! It works very well on piano, and is a superior piece of music, and it will mollify the 15 year old punk who has been dragged along by his rich mummy. It will gain you friends... ;)

Ludovico Einaudi (Trust me, it will be perfect: easy to learn, sounds more difficult than it really is, nice, melodic and new agey :D). Have a look here:

https://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php/topic,8225.msg113552.html#msg113552
(minimalist pieces – description of several Einaudi pieces.)

Satie:Gymnopedies (no.1 is overplayed, but the other two are equally nice and rarely played) and Gnossiennes.

Mendelssohn Songs without words. Have a look here:

https://pianoforum.net/smf/index.php/topic,4371.msg40871.html#msg40871
(Mendelssohn favourites)

Schumann – Scenes from childhood (especially no. 1 “From foreign lands and people”, no. “Traumerei” and no. “The poet speaks”), Album for the young op.68 (especially no. 13 “May, lovely may”, no. 14 “Little study”, no. 28 “Remembrance”, no. 30 “***”, no.32 “Sheherazade” and no. 35 “Mignon”).There is also a very beautiful, and easy piece in his “Forest Scenes” called “Solitary Flowers”.

John Field – Nocturnes (no. 4 is my favourite).

Scarlatti: k27, k69, k213 (all suitably lyrical and melancholic)

Schubert – Impromptus (op. 142 no. 2 in Ab is the easiest – op. 90 no. 3 in Gb is the nicest)

Faure – Song without words op. 17 no. 3

Dvorak – Silhouette Op. 8 no. 2

Max Reger – Maria Wiegenlied and Traume am Kamin op. 143 no. 2   (con moto)

Ottorino Respighi – Notturno

Grieg – Lyrical pieces (especially Waltz op. 12 no. 2, Berceuse op. 38 no. 1, Melody op. 38 no. 3, Butterfly op. 43 no. 1, Little bird op. 43 no. 4, Erotik op. 43 no. 5,  Notturno op. 54 no. 4, Arietta, Melody op.47 no.3, At your feet, Gade)

Liszt  - The “Consolations” (S. 172) are all easy and nice (no. 3 is a favourite with the general public)

Prokofiev – Melody in Eb major, Vivo in G minor (from his “Juvenilia”) and from his “Pieces for chidren” op. 65 you can try no.11 “Evening” and no. 12 “The moon strolls in the meadows”. His Prelude op. 12 no. 7 is also nice as are the four “Fairy dances” (op. 97 nos 1 – 4) which he transcribed for piano form “Cinderella”.

Edward MacDowell – To a wild Rose

Shostakovitch: Lullaby. Also, have a look here:

(Shostakovich preludes op. 34)

Samuel Barber also has some nice, easy pieces:

https://pianoforum.net/smf/index.php/topic,2363.msg20436.html#msg20436
(Barber piano pieces)

Victor Carbajo is a wonderful contemporary Spanish composer writing mostly tonal music. There are some real gems (like his “Valsitos for Emilia”) here:

(Victor Carbajo)

There is some really beautiful (and easy) piano music from animes. Have a look here:

(Beautiful music that is not hard to play)

Just the tip of the iceberg, but it should keep you going for a while.

Good luck :).

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Ottorino Respighi – Notturno

^^ definitely a nice one.

Quote
Grieg – Lyrical pieces (especially Waltz op. 12 no. 2, Berceuse op. 38 no. 1, Melody op. 38 no. 3, Butterfly op. 43 no. 1, Little bird op. 43 no. 4, Erotik op. 43 no. 5,  Notturno op. 54 no. 4, Arietta, Melody op.47 no.3, At your feet, Gade)

good too.

yeah, most of what bernhard recommends. some more ideas that aren't as classically oriented but still sound nice are pieces from Martha Mier (her books "Romantic Impressions", books 3 & 4, are great). There's also David Lanz (in particular his "Cristofori's Dream") and Jim Brickman. ;)

Debussy - Girl with the Flaxen Hair aka La Fille aux cheveux de lin
              -  Valse Romantique

Schumann - Fantasy Dance

Beethoven - Six Ecossaises

Flight of the Bumblebee

Entertainer or Maple Leaf Rag

Go to the local music store and see if you can find the book "Encore: Standard literature that motivates" selected by Jane Magrath. It has the Fantasy Dance and the Beethoven in it as well as several other great pieces. A couple of other books you could look into are "Piano Literature for the intermediate grades, Vol. 3" by Bastien, and "Favorite Classics" bk. 2, selected and edited by Lancaster and Renfrow. Between those two books, you'd have quite the selection of music for your classical repertoire, from baroque - 20th century.

This is exciting.  ;D Best of luck to you with it.  8) I'm sure you'll have fun doing it.
