breakfast moosh
on: September 28, 2005, 05:44:33 AM
i have major issues with breakfast, i just don't like it, in fact i'd get rid of it all together apart from the fact that i have convinced myself that i can't think properly unless i eat something decent for breakfast. so it was good through winter, i got hooked on porrige using apple juice as my liquid- good because it was mooshy, not completely solid and not all liquid so it didn't make me feel like vomiting. but now i'm over it and have resorted back to apple juice and a banana. but it's just not enough. i need suggestions of some kind of moosh i can eat for brekkie that's not hard to make, doesn't include milk or any dairy products, and isn't completely liquid or solid!! haha if you have any suggestions i will be over the moon and you will be my new idol :D

What about fruit smoothies? Get a banana, some strawberries and blueberries and chuck them in the blender. You can put a bit of yoghurt in there, or some people use honey, or nothing at all. They're filling because you can put quite a lot of fruit in there, and they taste lovely.
The only problem is having to clean the bloody blender afterwards. :)

A pasta salad from the supermarket (I don't know if they contain dairy products)but failing that you could prepare your own the night before.

ok- interesting suggestions but 1) fruit smoothies are liquid, so despite the fact that i do love them the lack of solidity makes me feel sick
2) pasta in the morning? ahh maybe not...and pasta's too solid
3) eggs- i have tried boiling eggs and that was good, until my mum told me that i might go crazy if i eat too many eggs- scrambled makes me feel sick in the morning- i can't stand the smell!!
i was thinking of trying museli- does that work with apple juice instead of milk??

HA how fussy am i!! maybe i well and truly am screwed. but thank you all for the suggestions, it's always appreciated:)

cornmeal what is cornmeal?!! sounds like some random hippy thing that vegetarians say is really good for you, and then you try it and it's the most disgusting tasteless thing on the planet- like buckwheat pancakes NEVER try those things they are revolting. but hey the recipes have the word mush in them which i'm quite impressed with. i once tried the sanitarium up and go flavoured milk poppa thingys and they were gross too.

OMG im the opposite.

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. I go to bed always looking forward to the mornings...lol

Every single day (well for about the past year) i've had weetabix, with warm milk (usually skimmed depending on whats in the fridge) and dried fruit or raisins...I recently began adding a little honey to it and it's gorgeous.

Weetabix is such a good start to the day because it fills you up for hours and i find i can always concentrate for so much longer than if i have anything else - which is great for my morning piano practise...

I tried to explain what weetabix is to an American friend, he didn't really get it - do you not get it in USA?

mmmmmmm

I think Weetabix is like shredded wheat, isn't it?

And Tash, yes muesli with apple juice would work. And cornmeal is, I guess,  an American thing (I mean North and South America)...you can make cornbread with it ("sturdy and slightly dry" as my cookbook says) as well as cornmeal mush...which is actually pretty good, especially if you make it at night and fry up slices in the morning...which I haven't done for 20+ years so I guess it's not that good  :P

And eggs won't make you crazy if you eat them every day.

Me, I eat porridge every single day...with bran cereal on top.

You could pour your wheaties the night before.

Mmmmmmmm  :D

I enjoy some occassional cream of wheat with brown sugar. I've got a stockpile for when the milk runs out.

Seen 'End of Days'? You could do like Arnold; grab random stuff off the counter, some floor-pizza, throw it all in a blender and you're ready to fight evil!

I would, but my blender leaks all over the place  >:( >:(

lol what you don't know what cornmeal is?!
well it's very american i guess.. definately southern. like grits. haha..
um well cornmeal is like really finely ground corn that you use instead of flour for like, cornbread muffins (which are reaaallly good) or whatever. I think they use it in something called johnny cakes, which are basically cornmeal pancakes (I think).
And grits is also from corn- goooood stuff <3 it but it's very very southern, lol. Basically it's the southern version of oatmeal. Grits is also the abbreviation for "Girl Raised In The South." :P (which I so am.. *sigh* I'm just a crazy southern gal...)
and yeah buckwheat pancakes are UBER gross. :-X

Well, I'm the exact opposite.  I love breakfast.

I custom make my oatmeal, it's consistency varies depending how much liquid you pour so you may want to try it out.

Dry oat meal (however much you want)
Coco powder
Cinnamon powder
Sugar (to taste)
Plain Soya milk
Chocolate Soya milk
Pure Maple Syrup
Honey (optional)

Mix all dry first.  Pour in your preferred mix of plain and chocolocate soya and heat.  Add Maple syrup and honey after heated.

Ok, I realize that may be a bit rich for some people, but I like my food either over the top or unconventionally plain.  I could eat a steak for breakfast and be ok, but I rarely would eat steak anyways.  I usually have heavier breakfast with at least some meat on school days.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

OMG RICE that's such a good idea i'm so looking at that breakfast mush recipe, provided i can be bothered making the effort to cook the rice...but that's a good idea.

ah the brits love their 'weetabix', personally i prefer 'weetbix', the sanitarium aussie version, which my sis was hooked on, and then she left to england so we were stuck with like 4 packets of the stuff. and then she comes back here and finds she is hooked on the weetabix instead.

cornmeal...we have cornflour...i dunno if that's the same thing or not...

man you can eat a steak for breakfast?!! that's impressive

There is no need to eat breakfast. I never eat breakfast. I wake up pretty early (usually before 6), and I will only eat something around 10:30 - 11:00 am simply because by then I feel hungry.

The reason you (and I) cannot stomach breakfast is simply because during the night the digestive system goes on detox mode, and loads of toxins are emptied in the stomach/intestine to be dispatched in the morning. So when you get up, your digestive system is full of toxins. If you eat breakfast, it goes into absorption mode and reabsorbs all the toxins.

On waking up, the best thing to do is exercise on an empty stomach and drink lots of water (or herbal teas like peppermint or fennel), then after one hour (if you feel like it) eat your breakfast. Your body knows very well what it needs, there is no reason to force yourself to eat if you are not hungry (or to force yourself to eat if you are stuffed).

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Er... Waking at 6 is not a prerequisite. You can still do it if you wake up at 1pm :D

I know next to nothing about football, cricket, baseball, tennis and similar sports. :-[

No not at all! Weetabix looks a little like shredded wheat but its a completely different texture/taste and MUCH nicer - more of a porridge like texture but nicer!

I had 3 weetabix this morning at 7am and now it is 1.45pm and i am not at all hungry.

I am off to drink coffee and practise piano.

P.S I thought it was bad to eat an egg everyday cos they have loads of cholestrel in them don't they? Not too keen on eggs meself, especially the yolk bit.

Eggs have had a bad rap in terms of cholesterol. Most of the  cholesterol in your body is produced by your body, from the fats you eat. If you have a cholesterol problem, you should limit your fats, and everyone should avoid saturated fats and especially trans fats, which lead your body to produce LDL (the bad type of cholesterol).
