Can the earphones damage the audition?
on: August 11, 2003, 09:19:25 PM
I want to buy an electronic piano for practicing early in the morning and late at night, but  I'm concerned about this question: is it true that a long lasting exposure of the earing aparat to the earphones can damage it? Or it depends on the volume?

Both. At very loud volumes even short bursts can cause permanent damage, and prolonged exposure to loud volumes also does. If you get any decent headphones and play at the level of a real piano, it probably wouldn't damage your ears more than a real piano would. The only critical factor in this matter is the intensity of the sound, so you should be careful not to over exceed certain levels... if you have even the slightest feeling of 'pain' or discomfort, even if it is only for a split second, use an equalizer to scale down the frequencies which are causing the discomfort.

you could also get higher tendency of developing cancer in the ear, but not THAT much higher.  I think that's only for cell phones, not sure if it applies to earphones (but I think it does)

@ NetherMagic:

Your chances of getting cancer will not increase due to headphones, nor will it from cell phones. People used to think that headphones and cell phones can cause cancer since they have electro-magnets in them, basically because they generate an electromagnetic field. So far there has been no medical connection established regarding any effect on the human body by electromagnetic fields. This makes sense since the human body is inherently not very magnetic. If it would be true that the electromagnetic fields had a damaging effect, MRI scans would probably be illegal by now.
