competition advice
on: September 30, 2005, 04:12:31 PM
I'm entering a local piano competition next year, and am starting to get pieces ready.

The only one I am working on for this at the moment is Liszt's 6th etude "Vision". Does anyone else have other suggestions (romantic period onwards please). I need to get another two prepared.

Also, I dont know when to play the Liszt- it would make a good first round show off piece, but would also be a good final piece if i managed to get that far.

That's a really tough question for us to answer, because no one here knows the level that you are at.  Of course there are hundreds of pieces that we could recommend, if we knew your technical and musical level.
Anyway, good luck!   :)

Yeah, i should have thought about that.... well... i dont do exams or that kinda thing, so i dont really know a level as such...

To give an idea, the most recent works i can play confidently are:
Debussy- Preludes and Estampes (complete)
Ravel- Gaspard de la Nuit (complete)
Liszt- Transcendental Etudes No 3,4,5,6,11,12.

Don't really know their standard though, apart from the 5th transcendental etude, which ive heard a lot about on this site.

Gaspard de la Nuit and a few Transcendental Etudes (4, 5, 12) would work.

Hmm.. What about some of chopin's etudes? Like Op 10 no 4? That's a good one.. Or Fantaisie Impromptu.. You might wanna play something a little slower like a waltz, which is more soothing. A nice one would be Chopin's waltz in G-flat major.. (you see, i'm a Chopin fan) Maybe next time you'd wanna try La Campenella, by Niccolo Paganini. ;) All the best!

Have you talked with your teacher about this? They would understand your abilities best, as well as have some familiarity with the competition you are planning to take part in.

Someone who is self-taught to the level of being able to perform feux-follets and the complete gaspard de la nuit confidently seeks advice on repertoire selection for a local level competition?

thorn,
I'm thinking you might want to coach with someone to prepare for the competition. It's always good to have a second set of ears. Even professionals coach with someone from time to time. As to repertoire, the gaspard sounds good but it depends on the requirements for the competition. Good luck!
