Fantasy Improptu right hand fast passage problem, help..
on: September 30, 2005, 07:39:10 PM
Hi there,
I'm currently working on Fantasy Improptu for my recital in 4 weeks but I run into to some problem when practising this piece, my left hand and the 3-4 rhythm should be fine and I have the piece memorised, but I couldn't get the fast passages for my right hand up to speed "comfortablely" (my aim is aprox crotchet=168), even when I managed to play at 152-160,  my right hand is forcing to play the notes and there are some unevenness.
Could anyone give me a step by step way to get my right hand up to speed, so I can play "comfortablely" and smoothly in 3-4 weeks or less. It is really the first time I play passages that fast, I' not sure what is the best way to practise this kind of passage. Big Thank You.

Cheers!!!

I get the feeling that Chopin almost improvised this Impromptu, so with that thought in mind perhaps you should improvie a little. For example from bar 5 - 12 you could play the left hand in simple arpegios but in similar harmony with the improptu, and with the right hand play very fast chromatic scales up and down the piano, try to make this sound as smoth as possible. Once you have don this start again  by playing arppegios with the right and left hand as fast and as smooth as possible. From bar 13 - 24 just play octaves with your right hand and arpegios with the left hand. Once you have masterd this you will find that you have more speed in your fingers and ready to play what is written. All the best

Try practicing only the right hand, light and slow (even if you can play it faster).
Repeat the passage 30 min practicing this way. Then rest, doing other things, about 10-15 minutes at least, and try playing only that hand fast and lightly, you´ll notice the difference.

And with each slow, right hand only, light, long time practice you´ll aquire supleness when you try to play it fast after 10-15 minutes at least of asimilating it doing other things.

Just try it, it won´t do any harm. It works for me.

You either do or do not. There is no try- Yoda

Only a curiosity:

There is a First Version of this Fantasy Imprompty, 1834 and a Second Version of 1835.  If you play the first one, becomes more difficult to play in the future the second, there are great differences between them.

Nelson Freire had recorded the Second version.

When I tried to play this second edition I almost became "frozen-squeezed- paralyzed" and so I give up to play the second version, and restore playing  my old first version.... :)

ps Chopin Impromptus Wiener urtext editions (red cover)  - Ekier-  has both versions.
