the best pieces to CLOSE a programme with?
on: September 30, 2005, 09:28:45 PM
yes, its always difficult to choose a final pieces, but these are some of my favourite choices -

liszt B minor sonata - extremely profound and emotional finish

liszt TE11 - i think this is an awesome passionate way to end a program with a profound peaceful ending

my personal favourite - alkan symphony for solo piano - a whirlwind of insane FURY to leave the audience stunned, that is...if you have the technique to pull it off.

Chopin B minor Sonata

Grieg E minor Sonata

Both have dazzling 4th movements that would be great finales. Then throw in a Scriabin etude for an encore.

Bach-Busoni: Chaconne in D minor

hahaha, well that is true, it works great either way, opening or closing, i think its cooler as an opening piece though, setting the atmosphere, but yeah that ending is a stunning way to end a recital too.

randomly.

You either do or do not. There is no try- Yoda

Liszt-Busoni "La Campanella"!
Forget about Liszt's original transcription - everything is fine except the ending, which sounds bland, lifeless and lacking sparkle as compared to Busoni's arrangement.

Villa-Lobos "O Polichinelo" would be a good encore (with the final glissando).

Goldberg Variations
You don't really play goldberg variations at the end of the program ....you play it as the Entire program. Maybe you mean one variation from it ..in that case, which one ?

I like to close with a set of Rachmaninov etudes (Especially op. 39 n. 8) or Wild-Gershwin etudes.
For a good laugh, check out my posts in the audition room, and tell me exactly how terrible they are :)
