schumann romance op.28 no. 1
on: October 05, 2005, 02:02:42 AM
first of all, i don't know why the second romance is more famous, the first is much better.
one of its themes is similar to a theme in his piano concerto op.54
so
anyone got a midi or recording (except for the recording of willhelm kempff which i have) of schumann romance op.28 no.1 ?

i haven't played this  piece, but checked it out of wcu library to look at it.  good piece it looks like for sightreading, for one thing.  it goes from B-flat minor to F-sharp major (interesting transition for middle section) and uses the pivot note/chord of B-flat minor to transition to A-sharp note and F-sharp chord (VI in B-flat).  hope my theory is right here!

considering the speed (which i have marked 88=quarter note) which may be original marking with breitkopf nr. 2684, it's to be played fairly fast.

not much help, am i?  but i've been thinking about your question as i would like to play this myself.  i noticed the accents on the second beat (and ties).  definately a sung piece.  and interesting that you brought out the melodic ties to the schumann piano concerto (which we are listening to in class).  will compare the two myself - thanks for the ideas!  and, hope you get more responses.

ps one last thing i noticed is that on the first measure of the middle section the G is played first by fourth finger and then switched to fifth while holding the note down (so you can continue to play the middle section).  any passages that go down more than two steps follow this pattern (4-5) on the fingering.

i have a recording of this piece by willhelm kempff , the performance isn't top notch because it was recorded when kempff was very old.

contact me at icq# 77115556 or messenger hodi_n@hotmail.com
i will tell you the parts where it's VERY similar to schumann's piano concerto

thanks!  that will greatly add to my being able to discuss the schumann in class.  on another thread i was comparing one of beethven's song cycles to the middle movement of his 5th PC.  interesting that composers borrowed their own ideas sometimes.  maybe they had particular significance (and poetry in mind).  to take this borrowing of schumann's farther, we should look into his song cycles and see if there is any similarity of motif's to the romance op. 28.  i have one song cycle here somewhere buried.  i heard 'fraun lieb und leben?' i think it is?  performed by an excellent soprano many years ago and never forgotten how beautiful it was.  will take a look.  seems like those song cycles always sound better in german.

Hey that is such a nice piece by Schumann. I learned the first part a few years ago. What can I say about it? It's just great to play, although very difficult to get it right. It's so fast. But I love it for its expression and the lovely middle section. I have performed it two times in public and they all loved it.

I have never tried the second part. Although it's beautiful, I think it's too slow for me.
