Broken digital piano
on: October 10, 2005, 10:38:27 PM
I was playing a Bach piece when suddenly a key stopped sounding  :(
It was completely without warning, the previous time I hitted it sounded ok and the next time no sound at all unless I hit it really hard (and then the sound is normal, ie loud).
I already mailed to the support centre of Roland (it's a Roland RD-150) asking how much it might cost fixing it. But I fear it may be high as the piano already is 5 years old.

Does any of you have experience dissamblembing a digital piano? Maybe it's just a piece of dust that got trapped? I might as well check it myself first, my only fear is that if I remove the cover all the keys jump out at once or something like that.  :o

I've taken apart an old Technics digital before, and there was nothing jumping out so to speak. But i don't know how the Rolands look inside. I'm pretty certain that nothing will happen until you start messing inside it though.
Removing the "cover" so to speak shouldn't be a problem.

I had a simular problem with that one, some notes not working properly (only when struck hard). The only thing i did, was spray the contacts with a "corrosion removal spray" (don't know the word for it in English) and put it together again. It worked like a charm afterwards.
But mine didn't stop working suddenly, like yours. That sounds more like something has come loose, or got bent, to me.

Thanks for your reply, I will have a go at it.

I also received reply from Roland. They say the keys must be removed and then the keycontact prints must be removed and checked. Probably clean them with alcohol should solve the problem. They say if I don't see myself fit to do this, I should bring it to a service centre (cost between 50 and 100 euro). A nice and quick reply from Roland, I thought they would advice to bring it immediately to a service centre.

Well, I've done it and the key works normally again  :)
But I must confess it was much more work than I had anticipated. I had to remove all the sides, then remove the whole keyframe with all its keys, then remove one of the contactprints (there are only 2 for all the keys, so one such print is huge) and then uncover the contact of the key. Disassembling, cleaning and reassembling took me like 2 hours but I'm happy.
I must say this incident has gained my respect for Roland, that thing is built like a tank.

Great to hear! It's a good feeling when you can fix it yourself like that, and the wallet likes it too...
