Unfinished works
on: October 12, 2005, 07:37:19 AM
What does everyone think of reconstructions of composers unfinished works - eg. Elgar 3rd symphony, Beethoven 10, Mahler 10? and possibly the big one - the new reconstructions of Mozart's requiem.
I've heard Elgar's - i have some difficulty with the fact that he specifically said for no one to touch it after he died yet they allowed (insert name i can't remember) to finish it.  That said i did sort of like it though, the first movement theme is rather striking.
There was a program on the radio about the requiem in which he played the 'amen fugue' reconstructed by Robert Levin I think which I really didn't like.  Apparently Richard Strauss touched up some of Sussymayrs orchestration - i'm sure that would be rather good though I don't know why it's not played

and does anyone know about Prokofiev's 6th concerto? whether it has been completed or part of it recorded? (or was it just a planned composition?)

Most of those unfinished works would be better left unfinished.  I love "Art of the Fugue" and literally cry every time I here where it breaks off.  I would love to play the work in a recital, and ask the audience to refrain from ANY applause and just sit in silence for several minutes.
