Can anybody tell me when the damper pedal became widely available on pianos? Any historical information would be much appreciated.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano suggests Silbermann added a pedal to replace Cristofori's organ-style draw stop.

So I guess the damper bit is more or less from day one, [same with the soft pedal too, according to that article] but the actual pedal came a little later when folk started copying Cristo's design.
