Need help choosing a piece
on: October 15, 2005, 09:08:25 PM
I have the option of learning either Debussy's sonata for violin and piano or Stravinsky's Italian suite for violin and piano, but not both. Also, as they're both going to be extremely difficult for me since Im not an experienced pianist, I would like to play whichever one is easier (even then it would still probably take me 8 or so months to learn it). So I would just like your opinion on which piece is easier, and if any of you have recordings of either piece, it would be nice to hear them in case difficulty ceases to be a factor. I tried to find them online, but i was not able to.

Now that I think about it, it occurs to me that Debussy may have written more than one sonata for violin and piano, and I dont know which number it is, but theres a Bb and Eb in the key signature. And i think its the most famous one he wrote.

thanks in advance.

I know nothing of Debussy's sonata(s) for violin and piano, but that's Bb major or G minor. Can you read key signatures? (legit question of curiosity, not intended as sarcasm or insult)

I don't know either Debussy or Stravinsky's Piano Sonatas, but if I had to make an educated guess, I think that Stravinsky would probably be technically more difficult--quite possibly atonal, maybe even aliatoric, or worse whereas Debussy, while generally employing a lyrical style often in pentatonic scales, is probably more traditional, for memorizing purposes, etc.

I can read the accidentals in key signatures but usually I cant tell in what key the piece is. I  know f major, c major, and a few here and there, but for the most part I cant tell.
