Wagner’s Universe in a Pianist’s Hands

One of the most thrilling performances offered at Cremona Musica this year was the Wagner by Liszt recital given by Filippo Tenisci – Italian pianist, born 1998 and celebrated for his refined interpretations and expressive mastery of the Romantic repertoire. After his recital we got the chance talking to Tenici about his Wagner/Liszt project. Read more

Finnissy Verdi Transcriptions
on: October 17, 2005, 07:42:31 PM
Dear Readers
Just a short post to inform any of you who live in the UK that I'll be giving the world premiere of the recently completed Verdi Transcriptions by Michael Finnissy: the concert takes place at the Warehouse, Theed St, London SE1 on 1 November, starting 6.30pm.

Michael started work on this huge cycle in 1972, and only finished it this year!

Verdi Transcriptions comprises 36 movements in 4 books; each piece is related in some way (sometimes distantly, sometimes very closely) to material of each of Verdi's operas, and his quartet and Requiem. The only extant recording - on Metier - is thus incomplete, featuring only 10 works in their completed state, and a number of sketched works that are now fully developed and completed. The whole work should last about 3 hours.

This should be an event to remember, since this piece may well - in due course - come to be regarded as one of the most significant additions to the piano repertoire of its time.
I hope some of you might make it along.

Best wishes
Jonathan

This is great news, Mr. Powell! It is a shame that I don't live in the UK, because I would really like to see you play live.

Is there any chance that you might perform in New York again in the next few years?

Hi.

I don't live in the UK. But I just want to say I was really pleasantly suprised by some of your recordings I recently required. I already knew I really liked the compositions, but the recording was just very well done, in terms of playing an sound/recording quality. Keep up the good work and thank you!

A Jazz Piano Christmas 2025 – But not at the Kennedy Center

For more than three decades, “A Jazz Piano Christmas” at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. has been a quiet highlight of the holiday season for jazz and piano lovers.
