Best way to sell a grand piano?
on: October 17, 2005, 11:17:10 PM
Hi,

We are selling a grand piano. Just wondering the best ways to get the word out? The local paper is an obvious one, but is still only a limited amount of potential buyers. Ebay is OK, but not my favorite way to sell something that's in this price range.

Thanks for any help,

Jason

Ebay is so cheap, you may as well. Although I think you're right, given a certain price and / or bulk and the inherent mechanical nature it's unlikely to attract buyers that aren't local and can't visit to see it before bidding - but some are daft enough to buy pianos from photos, why not give them the chance?

Other than that - ask yourself the reverse question, where would you look to buy a grand piano from? That's probably the best place - unless the answer is "a shop" in which case you'd probably have to trade it in for something else and that might not get the best price.

My first choice or advise would be Ebay or other online auction sites.  You have done local newspaper already, and selling your piano or trading it in to a local piano store is another option.  You may want to call your local city college music department or post a "piano for sale" on their bulletin.   ;) What kind is it by the way?

If it is a really nice piano, you might want to give it to a showroom to sell on consignment.

One piano store in our area specializes in used pianos.  Generally these would be pianos with some value.

They want a consignment fee (20% -- ?).   However, they have a showroom and a steady stream of visitors.  So far more interested buyers would see your piano than if you just sold it blindly with a classified ad.

Another advantage  of putting it out on consignment -- you eliminate all the hassle of showing it, endless phone calls asking about it, and so forth.

Could also try your relatives.  One of them may be eager to start learning.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
