what is it?     :-\

A German guy meets his girlfriend

So off they go to the girl's flat, where the German produces four large bedsprings and a duck caller.
"I vant you to tie ze springs to each of your limbs.."
The girl finds this very strange, but complies, fastening the springs to her hands and knees.
"Now you vill get on your hans and knees."

She duly does this, balancing on the springs.
"You vill please blow zis vistle as I make love to you."
She finds all this very odd, but figures it's harmless

She is bounced all over the room by the energetic German, all the time honking on the duck caller.

Finally she gasps "That was totally amazing....... what do you call that?"

"Ah", says the German, "Four-sprung duck technique"

Technique is how you do something. Initially,  the process consists of training the body to move in the most economical and efficient way possible to facilitate what is heard in the mind. This means learning how to move the hands, fingers and arms on a vertical and horizontal axis in conjunction with the inner ear. A kind of 'hard wiring' of what is heard in the mind to the physical motions of the body.

Once this has been accomplished to a high degree, technique is only something which is seen in retrospect.

Well, I'd say, the greater amount of technique you have, the easier you can make a note sound exactly how you want it to.  It's not always about playing fast, but playing controlled.  How many "shades" can you make a note sound as?  How quiet, how stacatto?  How clear?  How voiced?  And yes, then there is speed as well.

My 2 cents, or rather, my teacher's.  We just had this same dicussion a couple lessons ago. ;)
