Post your Goals here (piano related!)
on: October 22, 2005, 05:05:58 PM
What are your short term goals and long term goals?  How are you going to get there?

ie. short term goals:  Learn scales.

Long term goals:  Play at Carnegie hall 10 times

Practice practice practice.

No these aren't my goals.  Not really.  I did hack away at Carnegie before, but not on the piano.  And it was backup for some jazz quartet (initials: D.B.).  Although I did walk on stage when no one was there and hack thru the tchaikovsky vln concerto - all by myself and it was dark!.  Great sound.  Felt good.  Never mind.... this place is about piano.  So.. what are some of your goals??

Short term goal:  Learn Chopin Nocturne #72/1.  I want to at least be able to read the notes to the last page by.... Sunday night!

Long term goal: Develop a deeper understanding of how music "works" (and have fun).

Just continue paying attention to all these ideas which constantly flood my brain and develop them as best I can until either they run out of steam or I peg out.

Short term, 3 written exams for piano on Dec. 9 and 10, and a workshop to play in the Saturday.

Middle term,  workshops to play in throughout the winter and spring.  One more theory test in May, and piano exam in June.

Long term, ARCT performer's, ARCT teacher's, full studio, God willing.

I like to redeffine my goals every once in a while. Whenever I become disillusioned :P For now...

Short-term - Sightreading (Richman book), scales/chords/arps, piece after piece of repertory.

Mid-term - get up to grade 8 standards, enroll at uni for b.mus. At some point get a grip on jazz.

Long-term - Have fun w. acquired skillz, share the music, teach.

Violinist: You must be pretty damn good on the violin! With that kind of background and dedication you'll probably get the hang of piano in no time.

Short Term - crack AB gr8. I casually learning this rep, and other pieces inbetween to brush up where required.

Long Term - develop my technique to a level where I can play some of my favorite pieces, and not have to struggle just to get my fingers in the right place!

Thanks RC.  I can hack my way through most stuff on the violin.  I love the violin.  But it's not a crime to love the piano too.  And I'm improving on the piano.  Violin right now seems to be at a standstill.  Improvements is what excites me about piano right now.  Thanks again for the encouragement.  I need the encouragement.  I have trouble finding the right teacher right now.  So I'm teaching myself and using the folks here to help me along.

I see myself improving by leaps and bounds every week.  I started back on piano in August 2005.  Now it's a little over 2 months of playing again after not doing a thing with the piano for about 25 years.

I signed up for a masterclass that they're having at the Steinway store.  I said to myself free lesson for someone famous?  Gee whiz.  Sign me up!  My first masterclass in piano ever!  (I've been in tons for chamber music and violin, but never piano alone!).... maybe I'll get kicked off stage :(

i made a list of all the songs im going to play in the future. (like 100 pieces)

and my goal is to perform it all in audiences, to i after collapse and turn inzane,
it would then be best to end with rachmaninov pianocon. no 3. ;D
(forgot the part of having fun)

then: put it all on cd, so people still can listen to my music after i turned inzane.
it has to be before age 30, or else no time, because of family and lots of noisy kids.

a nother goal could be, making not known piano pieces famuous through me :)
but that is for dreamers

goal 4: not playing the same piece over and over again for years ;D

goal 5: is to get to goal nr 6

goal 6: make history.......and turn famouos after im dead....(i hope not)

short term goal:
adapt my first Bernhardian (et al.) planning (100 pieces in 5 years). At the moment i'm listing up my questions. Then i will search (and get lost) in the forum to see if the answers are already there (they probably are!). After that i'll be firing some more questions.  ;D
middle term:
1) find a new teacher (i left mine after 9 years because he is not aware of even the simplest Bernhardisms (et al.)  :o )
2) Have a look into all the sheet music of scarlatti's sonatas. Read some books on Scarlatti.

long term goal: i just heard a piece that affects my long term goal:
Spirale (improvisation on) from Alexis Weissenberg played by Simon Mulligan.

immediate term: play convincingly (i would say win, but you can never be sure of those things) in the competition, masterclass and recital i have coming up.

medium term: get better at sightreading, learn challenging and interesting works

longer term: succefully audition for music colleges, or at least get a renowned and great teacher (this is where it starts to get ropy)

long term (dreams rather than goals): participate in international piano competitions, either suceed or be 'the upstart who had everyone loved but didn't confrom to the judges standards', perform recitals and concertos in increasingly prestigious venues and to larger crowds, have a nice fairly large repertoire, and have a CD to my name.  Ultimate dream- play a concerto at the BBC proms live on national TV.  If not, have a great life doing the one thing i feel i survive by, playing the piano.  But hey, i can dream!!! ::)

Hi all.

Short term (2 weeks): finish learning Variation 3 from the Goldberg Variations (I already play the Aria and Variations 1 and 2 error-free - and quite convincingly, I'd say! :-) )

Mid term (1-2 years): be able to play the complete Goldberg set and have become, by that time, a better sight reader, so that future endeavors take less time.

Long term (10 years): be a competent sight-reader, so that I can easily play pieces I like without much trouble - and almost instantly. Teach (if such a thing is teachable) my three or four children (who are yet unborn) to love music and to play the piano from an age earlier than the one by which their father started his piano studies (28)...

Cheers!

it's really hard to have the same goals when your right leg is banged up.  i tried playing the pedal with my left foot, but it looks like i belong to a cleft foot club.  i am also now a part of the injured mom's club.  maybe my first goals will be to get my kids to listen when i whine for various things that i need right away.  'a glass of cold water'...'can you please pick up a few things so i don't trip'...'is the oven on?'

i accomplished a very big goal today.  i scooted upstairs.  now, how to get back down.

(if i don't message after this, it will be that i broke my leg again)  how cool would that be?

imaginary goals - if i had the guts:

call my piano teacher and ask if he would consider making a monthly house call
practice for four hours despite the toes turning blue
schedule physical therapy nurses RIGHT NOW - instead of after thanksgiving
practice on the keyboard drawn on my cast
beg someone for a digital keyboard
look at my music away from the keyboard
get the piano tuned

i don't really have long term goals (like that bernhard 5 years-100 pieces list) cos there isn't much good just planning and thinking about it. i'm focused on my current repertoire which means this year's rep.
i have tones of pieces and concertos which i'd like to play in future, but this year list looks like this

december 2005
chamber music competition, i'm playing in trio, me and 2 flutes

february 2006
solo competition:  bach prelude and fugue d minor
                             chopin etude 10/1
czerny etude (yeah i KNOW grr..) op.740 i think
croatian composer, haven't got scores yet
                             liszt  8th hungarian rhapsody

march & april 2006
2 concerto gigs, mozart anniversary...recently became very fond of mozart's music...not that i didn't like it before too

may 2006
another competition, i have no clue which repertoire i'll play, but certainly not the same as competition in february. i'm waiting for my teacher suggest something. it's compulsory to play one mozart piece, since i already did variations, we decided to go with fantasy d-minor. there was some mentioning chopin op.44 polonaise, cos i've learned it by heart few months ago. ah, teacher's word is last one haha so gotta wait and see. and i desperately want to play some russian music...

summer 2006
master classes in hungary and austria very likely...i'll go probubly with chopin 10/1, la campanella and some new pieces...since i've started campanella but currently not practising it due to...oh well if my teacher reads this it'll be very cheerful on next lesson  ;D

Short term: Find a good tutor book and start learning fingering/technique for scales, arpeggios and chord progression!

Mid term: Play "Jurassic Park " and "Gymnopedie No. 1" well.

Long term: be able to play intermediate level and generally whatever pieces I particularly like in that vicinity and start piano lessons.

In the meantime:Manage my time so that I can fit piano practice into my schedule.  Practice both efficiently and correctly.

In between-time: Play Rachmaninoff's Romance for 6 hands!!! I need to find one other person.. grrr

Not for awhile...:
Play Rachmaninov's Concerto no. 2!!!!
(If I accomplish this it will be pretty amazing considering I have a really short attention span.)

All your goals look so professional.

I started to learn the Piano in March. I have set myself 3 years to be able to pick up a robbie williams or somesuch song book and be able to play to my soon to be wife.

I also wish to do some ABRSM grades to keep me focussed on the skills necessary. I don't want to be a tune merchant who can play a few pieces well but cannot move outside of them.

My goals appear to be a little more downmarket than all of yours... :)

I take 2 lessons a week and am learning theory on my PC periodically. It is all very hard work but I am an optimist.

I hope I achieve my goals.

Sam.
