chopin 3rd scherzo how do you play this chord?

At the end of the first phrase?  Given that the eigth note chord may as wel; be a grace note before the sustained version, how do you play the LH chord twice this fast.

The chord is b major in first inversion but with the third and fifth doubled to make it a 5 note tenth.

so its going up Dsharp, fsharp,B,Dsharp, Fsharp.  And chopin indicates thumb on both the top dsharp and fsharp.  PLaying this once seems mildly doable but playing a graced note version of it before sustaining it seems impossible.

I'd think most people just leave the top fsharp in the left hand out?

The first time I play D#,F#, B, D# and the second time I rotate my wrist to play D#F#, B, F#.  If you need to you can also leave out the bottom D# here as the pedal is down.

Ron seems cool with my alteration (or maybe he hasn't noticed, in which case the jury won't either).  Also he says the first chord shouldn't be played too fast (ie its not a gracenote) - giving it its full time value is important; it makes it more majestic this way.

That is a great idea which I failed to think of.

Anyway can u tell Ron I have his Karabyts book if he's wondering what happened to it. 8) and that I intend on returning it to him at some point.

You could play D# and F# with you thumb, then the rest with 2, 4 and 5. Not easy, but possible if the full 1,2,3,4,5 is beyond your reach (as Id bet it is most people's)
