I just watched that movie the other day and all I can say is wow  :o
But anyways besides that, I was talking to my piano teacher the other day and just how it was interesting that they repeatedly called the Rach 3 the hardest piece in the world.  When I mentioned that to my teacher she just rolled her eyes like whoever thought up that one didn't really think it through.  Would you say the Rach 3 is the hardest piece in the world or no?

from what I have seen and read on classical forums, the general consensus is that the opus clavembalisticum piece by sorabji is the most difficult piece, I'm guessing with other standards to it as well (i.e. something someone made just to be the most difficult wouldn't count)

there was a large discussion about the difficulty of the oc earlier though. even though I like the music, I am not a pianist, so my input would probably be trivial in comparison to most of the highly experienced individuals that post here

The OC by Sorabji is harder and there are many more pieces than Rach 3 that are harder. I'm going to see Rach 3 in a month, and I would definitely not class it as the hardest piece...  ;D
Working on: Schubert - Piano Sonata D.664, Ravel - Sonatine, Ginastera - Danzas Argentinas

well its definately not the hardest piano piece, per se. but many professionals do view the rach 3 as the peak of piano performance. unfortunately this meant that it became a little over played, in my opinion.

and of course, its probably the hardest piece anyone would bother to try... OC... pfft.

:D

Technically speaking - it is the hardest of the classical era (meaning all the major composers from Bach to Rachmaninoff.

But of course in the contemporary sense - OC is the hardest piece ever (is there any harder), so technically speaking in the sense of standard classical repertoire - Rachmaninoffs 3rd is the hardest Piano Concerto.

I doubt many people have seen the score for the:
Sequentia Cyclica Super "Dies Irae" Ex Missa Pro Defunctis

Hell, neither have I, which makes me wonder how they know it's the length it is, but I'm sure that surpasses the difficulty of the OC, unless it's actually just the C Major scale for 8 hours. On the other hand, you would have RSI by the time you reached the end :/

Although listening to the TE "Harmonies Du Soir" right now seems like a friggin Biatch to play, considering I hear Boris boy hitting wrong notes (I think so anyway, sounds a bit dissonant as they say?)

I would say it's the most difficult in realistic repitoire.

But man, the Busoni concerto and Bartok 2nd are up there as well.
