Does This Happen To Anyone Else?
on: October 26, 2005, 11:56:44 AM
I find that with certain pieces, even if I can play it in time, all the right notes, and rubato etc where necessary, it never sounds satisfactory to me. Take Chopin's Waltz in A Minor (post humous). When I play this piece it always sounds muddy and messy to me, its quite annoying :(

Greetings.

More practice. If something sounds not right then something is wrong. Perhaps more articulation?

Best Wishes to all.

Some may disagree with this but are you happy with your piano.
Some pianos sound awful with certain music, but I don't think thats what your asking is it

My advice would be to listen to recordings that you think are good and try to imitate them, or in other words, produce the same mood or effect.

If it sounds muddy, you are probably overusing the sustain pedal.

Maybe try listening to your performance with the perspective of a listner not a performer.  In other words, record yourself playing and listen to that.  Do you hear the same thing on the recording as when you are performing?

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Could be the piano.

I had a masterclass lesson the other day and the prof. said I was banging. I moved to another piano to play the same thing and he said, "never mind; it was just the piano."
