Gavrilov Triumphant in Herkulesaal
on: October 28, 2005, 01:48:32 AM
Recently I heard Andrei Gavrilov play to a spotty crowd in Munich at the Herkulesaal.  The program's first half consisted of alternating 2 Chopin nocturnes with a virtuosic etude; the second half was the 10-piece suite of Prokofieff, Romeo and Juliet.  The playing was stunning: the Chopin nocturnes were original, beautiful, and mystifying (of course they got bad reviews in the press).  The Prokofieff was everything and more, and not once did I wish to hear it with orchestra!
Gavrilov it seems is only recently making a comeback after spending some time off the stage.  The papers told a dramatic story, of how the KGB relentlessly harassed him, even putting him into psychiatric wards, until Gorbachev called off the chase.  Meeting him in the artist room after the concert, he told me that, "defintiely, Gorbachev saved my life," and that he had played for him, and all the living US Presidents, and many other politicians, in the White House only the night before.

If you have the chance to see the new, refreshed, and much deeper Gavrilov, don't let anything get in your way.

Funny you mention it.  I jokingly asked him, if that was next in the Cards ("You know what they say... Putin... Put Out...") He said the job was a bore and sticking his tongue out, said he wouldn't be a policeman for ordinary people.  Then I said, don't forget about Paderewski, who served for Poland.  "Ah, but Paderewski was stupid!"
