Can anyone explain what are the benefits of having a internet piano teachers vs. a private one.  I know there are alot of internet piano courses out there these days, and looks even promising.  So, I'm really attempted to try it out.  It seems like it can also save you alot of money on lessions.

I think its a great way to learn music theory, but not the practical side, i gess it is a little like learning Martial Art from a book, it can be done but would you, or learning to swim on dry land.

Greetings.

I agree with zheer. Studying with a teacher in person is always the best. You will make much faster and surer progress and will have to deal less with bad habits. I have heard alot of "study with a teacher" advice so I would recommend it.

Best Wishes to all.

When you mentioned Internet Piano Teacher, I found that prospect intriguing.

But when you mentioned about saving money, then you lost me a bit.

To tell you the truth, I'm not familiar with the set up of these internet piano courses are.  Perhaps you could tell us some of the details about them so we can tell you what some advantages and disadvantages there are.

I do know that technology is coming along very fast where video conferencing can be merged with MIDI technology so that having a one-on-one real-time piano lesson is not in the distant future for practically every piano teacher and student.

I had the opportunity to try out a prototype of an Internet MIDI program with George Litterst of Timewarp Technologies, and he was able to control my MIDI digital piano from halfway across the country.  He's looking to merge this technology with his Home Concert Xtreme program and some video conferencing software like iChat to allow a teacher and student to have a virtual private piano lesson.  I'm not aware of any internet piano courses that are doing that yet, but if they are then I'd like to know more about it.

To be honest, Iv been teaching myself piano since Jan 2005 and I havent run into too many problems as yet. Iv been getting bits of advice from my sister (Gr8 piano), but mostly learning from the internet and through practice.

So I think it can be done, but is probably not to be recommended. I dont doubt that my approach with create progress walls. Infact, I plan to find a good teacher in the new year, as I hope really make some serious progress over the next 12 months (so many amazing pieces I want to play!).
