Programme advice
on: October 29, 2005, 07:42:12 AM
I'm giving my ATCL next year, but have not decided whether to do the Performance one (which has scales, sight reading ear tests, etc which i'm bad at) or to do the recital one (which has only pieces and a presentation). but whichever i do, i've picked the Beethoven 32 variations, chopin fantasie impromptu and rach preludes no.s 5 and 10 op.32. but if i do the recital, i need to choose one more piece. i've narrowed it down to either bach's P and F BWV 848 or Brahms op118 no.2 A major intermezzo. which one should i pick? i like the intermezzo a lot but the bach would probably give a better balance and variety to the programme. any ideas?
thanks in advance

I don't know wat exam system you are talking about, but here's my idea on this. From a strictly recital standpoint, the Brahms is a very good choice. It will be a nice contrast to the more technique-driven works and is more musical than the Beethoven and especially the Chopin, (not that the Bach isn't.) However, diversity may be an issue here and it's always a good idea to have Bach  on your program. Everything you are playing is full of romantic gestures and the Bach may actually be the better choice for the exam. And Bach can almost fit in any recital progam. It is universal music that is so brilliantly written that it brings out things in anything, from any time period.
