Who does the best Mephisto?

In my opinion it's Steven Hough  :)

Other note-worthy versions:

Horowitz (obviously  :P)
The Young Ashkenazy (the 18 yr old recording)

Check out-Rubinstein (live in Italy) Horowitz (with some wrong notes at the and, but with a beatifull middle section!) Matsuev, Richter (WILDE!) and one of my favourite Perahia! ;)

John Ogdon for the overall work.

Cziffra for the demonic octaves waltz towards the end. (Which makes or breaks the piece, in my opinion.)

Does anyone else here think the opening of Liszt's 'Orage' (AdP - Suisse No.5) sounds like the Gymnopedie from Hell?

Yes i have to agree with horowitz , kapell and cziffra, i havnt heard richters or wilds.....

dont wanna start arguements but since when does horowitz play something without hitting alot of noticable wrong notes :) we still love him!!!

Aspolutly!!! His Mephisto was recorded on the concert, and of course that he played wrong notes, but this is no important. The most important thing is that you can feel the MUSIC!!!
