Balakirev Islamey - Double Gliss.
on: November 02, 2005, 09:43:24 PM
i am just curious
i study this piece for quite long and heard some of recordings
of course video from paul wee
but the problem with double gliss. i saw many pianists who play this piece play with 2 hands gliss. (i think balakirev intended that play with one hand)
btw look at Jie Chen video from piano e competition         awesome performance but she played gliss with one hand!!! and just single gliss. not double???? so just curious that how it should be play
sorry for my bad english

I must admit that i have always played this octave gliss with one hand.

I have never played it with 2, but now you have brought this to my attention, out of pure interest, i am going to have a go. On the face of it, i would have thought that it would be harder to time correctly.

I have recently encountered another octave gliss in the Tausig-Weber-Invitation to the dance. However, on this occasion, you have no choice as the left hand has notes to play.

to play an octave glissando requires a bit of strategy. there is no getting around pain for a while. just use the side of the thumb and curve the knuckle on the pinky. hope this helps.

lock the thumb and only the big knuckle on the pinky...so the tip of the pinky just kinda flops...and just GOOOOOOO...thats the only way to do it...but MAKE SURE that the base of your pinky is locked, otherwise you will probly catch it and get behind a note or 2....

Cheers!

I find single gliss more convincing.  I can do the double with one hand but it's just weak.

of course, it has to be done right.

i've seen one done quite well, and the effect was quite good.

Hamelin does this in his own version of extended Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No.2. I have the video and it is amazing...

yeah i saw it
he did it so easy (i am sure his piano is very light from my eyes view) but the part after double gliss is phenomenal i like it so much
thank for all comments
i would stick with score to play double gliss with one hand (i will have a problem when i play on a petrof concert grand next year)
