Sorabji's Fourth Piano Sonata
on: November 04, 2005, 06:17:43 PM
I recently purchased Jonathan Powell's recording of KSS's Fourth Piano Sonata on eBay (for $31.25 including S&H—not bad for 3 CDs). I'm eager for the album to arrive! If you've heard this recording then tell please me what you think about it. Paul Rapoport said in an album review, "[T]hese discs contain some of the best playing of Sorabji to be heard."

This is an excellent piece, JP plays it incredibly. It lasts 2 hours and 20 minutes. The first movement is 47 minutes long. The second around 35. The last is a litte longer, but is subdivided into "Baroque" forms. Here's a sample from the beginning of the last movement for you:

Thanks for the sample! Powell's playing sounds as flawless as usual. I had to increase the bass on my equalizer; the recording, while of high fidelity, is a bit bright.
