Some questions
on: November 06, 2005, 01:43:22 PM
I notice that I mostly look at my left hand while I play the piano. I don't know why I do that, but if I'm gonna look at my right hand, like I do at my left hand, my left hand mostly makes an error. Is there an explanation for this? And I guess I should start working on this to avoid more problems in the future. The problem with this is that I sometimes can't remember what I play with my right hand. I can play it, cause I know where to put my fingers, but I mostly don't know what I play with my right hand, if you know what I mean.

Can you guys help me out to practise this better and avoid problems in the future?

Another question: I can memorize pieces kinda quickly and fast, but for some reason, I still make little errors sometimes. Of course, everyone can make an error, but this is more a "mind" error. Sometimes when I play a piece, I suddenly don't know what to play anymore. It's hard to explain, but it's some kinda black out. It mostly occurs when I'm gonna think of something else while I play. I think this is some kinda lack of concentration... I always had problems with this at school too.

Is there anything I can do about this, cause it really frustrates me sometimes. I have to say that I don't have this problem when some people are looking at me when I play. Cause then I don't wanna make errors and I'm fully concentrated at the piece.

Btw: I mostly have these "problems" when I play pieces with a longer duration. When I play short pieces, I don't really have these problems. The problem with me when I play a longer piece is that I focus on the difficult part. When I played that part I'm like "I'm glad that went fine", but the song doesn't stop there and then I mostly make an error or get that black out, or whatever I should name it. Also when I play a longer piece, part for part, I don't have these problems either.

Just some additional information. I hope you guys can give me some advicement/help to get better at this.

Thanks.  :)

Bernhard talked about this -- if I remember correctly, it's because the right side of your brain (which controls the left hand) is more visual and the left side of the brain (right hand) is more...verbal (?). Anyhow, I know I have always played HT scales looking at the left hand and mentally saying the RH finger numbers, and it works well. Perhaps if you work on the right hand part, mentally describing it (F-major-chord, or a-run-that's-almost-a-scale, or whatever) you will be able to overcome your difficulty. So I would say, don't worry about the fact that you're looking at your left hand, but do get to know the right hand music better.
