The Mars Volta
on: November 09, 2005, 03:05:09 AM
I just got their live album Scabdates, which is great. Their live performances are nothing like the album work. Lots of instrumental work thrown in.
For those who haven't heard of them. They are a rock band that formed around 2000. They perform pretty crazy music that's hard to compare to any other group. The best I can think of is Stravinky's
Rite of Spring
, because their music shifts around rhythms at such a frantic pace during some points. Best drumming I've ever heard. The music changes character so fast, that you might not like it at first, but it's great once you get used to it. This is a track from their first album
Deloused in Commatorium
. It's entitled
Eriatarka
. It's not quite as crazy as the stuff on
Frances the Mute
(their latest album), but it'll give you a decent idea of their sound. It's about 6 1/2 minutes long. (scroll down to the grey box, and you can stream it out of there.)

Imho they make the better music than any other performer or group currently going. So please post your opinion on them.
BTW the lyrics really don't make any sense(some drugs involved methinks) so don't bother with them. Enjoy it like you would vocal music in a foreign language.

At the Drive-in and The Mars Volta are two of my favorite bands. I love Eriatarka, but it sounds better recorded in studio than live, as with most of their stuff, although I'm sure the live "experience" is a whole other world. The lyrics in general are pretty surreal and abstract. Symbolist maybe?
At the Drive-in is also great, I recommend "Cosmonaut" and "Sleepwalk Capsules."
