Your favourite rendition of Chopin's Ballade No.4 Op.52
on: November 09, 2005, 03:02:30 PM
I know... another subjective opinion thread. But at least it's not a Rachmaninoff Concerto one.

Whose interpretation of Chopin's Fourth Ballade is your favourite?

Mine is without doubt Samson Francois'.

His colouring and clarity of tone, elegant rubato and above all, the passion and fire of the piece's conclusion are all astounding and these elements combine to produce what is, in my opinion, the greatest Chopin Fourth.
Does anyone else here think the opening of Liszt's 'Orage' (AdP - Suisse No.5) sounds like the Gymnopedie from Hell?

Cziffra

Certainly not... Cziffra's is among my favourite, his speed is similar to Francois' and he approaches Chopin from a completely different angle than he does Liszt, though you see some shades of both in the more exuberant works. (See the LH octaves of the Heroic Polonaise on the EMI DVD)

The ironic thing is that two of my favourite Fourths are completely disparate in speed: Francois clocks it at 9:21, Arrau takes his time at 12:31.

I'd be very interested to hear Brunhoff, Cortot and his pupils really come into their own when it comes to Chopin.
