Paul Wittgenstein.  He lost his RH in WWI and commissioned a bunch of LH only works, such as Ravel's D major Concerto and Prokovief's 4th concerto.

he played the ravel, but not the prokofiev. prokofiev even tried to turn it into a two handed piece, but never did.

Wittgenstein must have had a HUGE ego! He apaprently took so many liberties with Ravel's score and Ravel being the quiet one said nothing.  I think he did speak up eventually though. His recording of the concerto is not so good, rather messy.
He comissioned from all the greats of the day - Prokofiev, Ravel, Strauss, Britten and I think the Ravel is the only one he played.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

why spend the money to commission something and not play it? sounds pretty egotistical.
