Rachmaninoff Prelude Op.23 No.6
on: November 12, 2005, 02:04:38 AM
Hi everyone. I just recorded this today (11/11), and would like to share it. There are a few mistakes in my playing, and I would definetely like to improve my playing of it. I've been playing it for about one and a half months.
I find this Rachmaninoff prelude is rather underplayed compared to the other preludes in the same opus. It's a very beautiful piece though.
I'm playing this piece for an exam in February of next year, and it would be extremely helpful if you guys could give me some suggestions to improve it. Anyways comments are welcome and greatly appreciated.

Very good work! It sounds really nice.
Probably I would like to hear a little more of rubato at the beggining and a softer LH in the whole piece.
I like to imagine that the LH represents water flowing softly and constant (maybe I am crazy, but sometimes is useful to do these comparisons).
Watch out the pedalling. In some parts the sound gets a bit messy. Pedalling is very difficult in this prelude.
I really like it!!! It is one of my favourites rach's preludes.
Congratulations and thanks for sharing it!

Thanks for the reply!
I agree about the pedaling. I think I overdo it on some sections, but it is rather tricky to find the right balance. Also agree that my L.H. should be softer.

Wonderfully played! You are not far from excellence, only apply the corrections already suggested and that you agree with. It's a lovely piece, my favorite together with No 4.

It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.
A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

What a lovely piece! Nice work--All I would recommend is what some have indicated above--less prominent LH accompaniment. I had a little of the same problem initially when I learned the Rach Op 32 no 12, which has a RH motif that needs to be rippling rather than so well-defined.
I would try to think now in terms of "flow" such that the melody comes out more, the phrasing is more fluid (Rach writes these endless melodies, but it's all the more important to define phrases and not have it sound like "where's it going?") and gorgeous rippling accompaniment just carries the music along. (I like that water analogy someone used above!)
And once you have all THAT
just let go and throw all you got into it!
Have fun--
Teresa
