What should I do with my hand when it isn't playing?
on: November 12, 2005, 10:58:54 PM
Should it rest on the keyboard? Or should I hold it in the air, in order to let  drop my arm on the next note or chord?
Music soothes the savage breast.

As long as it isn't tiring you out, or interfering with your playing, it really doesn't matter.  Try not to conciously think about what it's doing, and see what happens.  That might be the best position to keep it in.

I completly agree with the other. If it isn't playing for a short time, I would consciously prepare it to hit the next note/chord, tough.

dont think about the hand!  It's part of you.  When I play piano, I try not to think about myself because who am I compared to the music? No one, thats who.  The music is the only thing that matters!  When you eat, its the food that matters.  Dont think about the fork.

There's a spot in the sonata I'm working on where the left hand plays by itself for two measures.  My teacher, a concert pianist, told me I should conduct myself with my right hand.  However, I felt extremely foolish waving at myself, so I just hold my other hand in place over the notes it will need.  :P
