New Piano Market Statistics: Inside the Quiet Transformation of Piano Playing

For those of us who spend our lives on the bench — whether teaching, practicing for a recital, or simply playing for the love of it – the piano has always been a singular concept: wood, felt, strings, and soul. Yet, recent global market reports reveal that the definition of our instrument is expanding and evolving in ways that affect us all. Read more

are files in the audition room clean?
on: November 16, 2005, 09:53:43 PM
I guess it's a bit late to be asking, seeing as I have already downloaded many songs from the Audition Room, but...

What if someone's computer is infected with a virus, and they decide to upload a file to the audition room.  This file then may be contaminated with the virus, and if we download it to our computer, we'll get it too.  Is this possible?  Or are there some sort of anti-virus checks that keep the Audition Room safe?

Don't worry. As the possible file extensions are limited to mp3, pdf, jpg and gif the risk for getting your computer infected from files attached in the forum is minimal.

Anyway, connecting a computer without up to date virus protection to the Internet is a very bad idea.

It seems moot since the site allows urls in any of the forums to afaict any site or file.

A fair amount of what you've listened too probably wasn't on the server at all [unless you've specifically only listened to stuff uploaded to this site]

As Nils says, you're unlikely to get a virus from the file types that can be uploaded.

But it's potentially possible since there have been security bugs in most of the popular media players and browsers, but it would most likely required a specially created mp3 or image file deliberately uploaded to target a known bug, rather than someone having a virus on their computer without their knowledge uploading their playing.

So treat it like anything else you might download or visit, keep your browser + media player software up to date with security fixes etc.
