The search function
on: November 17, 2005, 03:34:03 AM
Ah sat down at the computer after watching a piano vid and decided to make a topic about playing with a low wrist. Ah suddenly thought, "wait, let me see if ah can find anything using the search"

So ah typed "low wrist" in the space and hit enter.

This is what ah got

https://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php?action=search2;params=YnJkfCd8MSwyLDMsNCw1LDYsNyw4LDl8InxzaG93X2NvbXBsZXRlfCd8fCJ8c3ViamVjdF9vbmx5fCd8fCJ8c2VhcmNofCd8bG93IHdyaXN0fCJ8c29ydF9kaXJ8J3xkZXNjfCJ8c29ydHwnfHJlbGV2YW5jZQ==

Edit by admin: As the search setting is now changed the above link gives different search result and the comments below do not make sense.

Check the first five results, ignore the sixth, and check the results that follow

The question ah ask is:

Why does it search for words, within words?

Ah just typed in "low wrist" (with quotes) and it gives better results, but why does still search for words within words?

Tis very strange, no 8)

Does a google site search work?

https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&domains=pianostreet.com&q=low+wrist&btnG=Search&sitesearch=pianostreet.com

Probably better if so.

But to answer the question, searching to match only complete words [or not] is a feature.

Sure about that?

Ah only see "match all words" and "match any word"

These do not stop it from searching within words.

It is a feature for the admin only. ;)

Matching complete words only do of course give much greater precision in the search results but is heavy work for the database. As the database is quite large (150 000 messages of 100 mb in total) the searches are much slower. I have now tweeked the setting to search for complete words only and the searches now takes 5-15 seconds compared to 1-2 seconds with the previous setting.

I belive it is worth waiting the extra seconds to get more relevant search results and as long as it do not significantly slow down the forum for all other users it is better the new way.

Ah believe, we, who use the search function, are the few. Therefore, the risk significant slow down need not be a problem 8)
