You're not involved in your music, you're not mature enough to understand the piece, or you simply doesn't understand it.

Its easy just ask them what is your name where are you from, what is your job, you know just talk to them.

I must say it'd feel great if my biggest problem wasn't performing the piece but forgetting to engage in conversation.

I think what s/he means is that you played the notes, and didn't communicate the emotion or meaning of the piece. Have you read the poem? That's what Liszt was trying to capture in sound, maybe that will help...19th Century music is about overt emotional expression, not just playing the notes, and we (the audience) need to hear and feel that when the music is performed. Maybe this is an area you need to work on in your playing, I think your teacher thinks so...you are not useless! You will overcome this and suceed!  :D Hope this helps.

Oh Please dont be discouraged!! Most of the time when people play they dont communicate that is the hardest thing about performing it can take years to develop.  The biggest thing like Arensky said is understanding the piece yourself first.  you cant take people to a place you havent been or dont know where it is.  Analyse the piece and immerse youself in it and all that surrounds it. Engage with it too.  I have found the singlular most important thing with comminication particularly in romantic works is to SING, i mean really sing when your practising.  We are naturally expressive when we sing and this is a really guide when we play.  it helps you with following the line of the music too and direction and phrasing. Try it!!   Learning the notes is the hard bit, which youve done, communicating is the most important bit but when you understand the piece it will come quickly then all you need to do is have the confidence to project it!!! ;D

It could be to do with tone production, if you're sound isn't 'speaking', you're not playing out to the audience enough.  It mean's you're mising a core to your sound, strengthining the last joint of your fingers will help this. (whilst also keeping the rest of your arm free - basic piano playing I guess)
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

Listen to some opera and romantic art songs, and go for that kind of declamatory vocal expression when you are playing this piece.  You can be very free with your phrasing, lay the romantic rhetoric on thick, don't play too "in time" - this piece begs for taking liberties...
Anyway, Good Luck!
