who plays the fastest 10/1
on: November 19, 2005, 12:26:33 AM
Hey

What is the fastest recording of the chopin etude op 10 no. 1 you have heard, i reckon cziffra plays it quite fast in the Warm up improv video, but i havnt got many fast recordings of this piece!

If you have got a really fast recording of this piece i would love to hear it :)

my friend nathan did a 1'21 perf once,  i captured it on vid and posted it in some other forum before

As for commercial Dino Ciani did a 1'34 performance live, pretty much the fastest (argerich is like 1'45 or something)

Cziffra's BBC recital improvisation with 10/1 is never complete, but if it is, it should be faster than Argerich.

A polish contestant in CHopin competition played a 1'31 performance, and i have just saw that yesterday.

Are you guys serious, so far you have mentioned snail pace. I might be wrong but alfred cortot plays it around 176 crotchet beats per minut. I am definetly not a great piano virtuoso, but at the moment a can play various passages at around 180 crotchet beats per minut. Am looking to stick it on cruise control and play 10/1 Etude at 176 crotchet beats per minut eventually.

cortot rec's is more than 1'50. WIth all the respect(and he is one of my favorite), speed is not what i look for in his recording.

that would land you at about argerich's time, cziffra hits around 1'36 (ah had the rec once)

most pianist start at or above 176 then gradually sl*w down or speed up

I have to say but dont let paris find out , but thats a fairly good tempo.

why don't let me find out?!  so what, if i can't play it in 1.36, that doesn't mean i don't like it fast. what i'm trying to say whole time (but some people are obviously too much obssessed with speed) is that in my case i'm rather playing it slower for now, but clear. i can play it in real speed but with wrong notes which is very iritating. i don't want to get used to wrong notes and then having problems with relearning it because of that heh

personally i like martha argerich the most and she does play it fast and beautiful. ashkenazy recording is one of very good ones too, and from those less-known pianists i'd say yu kosuge. she recorded both opuses and although i don't like some etudes, her 10/1 and ocean etude rock (and they're faaaast just for the record you speed maniacs)

Paris i think u play da piece really well :) you will gain speed as you play it more... yes i agree you should play it slow to get it right, i too cannot play it at 176 without hitting wrong notes, i just keep it to 108 - 132 when practising.

This piece sounds good played fast or slow, i was just curious who plays it faster and if anyone had videos or audio's of it, just a stupid thread, i would still like to see that 1'21 video lol :)

PS: Never meant to start fights with this thread..

Minutes, quite sure of that one.

Why does every thread that discusses technique or speed have to attacked by IKNOWWHATMUSICISNITSSL*W-posters? "It isn't about speed...." / "It doesn't sound as good when played that fast" and of course "Speed = 0 musicallity"

YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT WITH THIS THREAD.

 "Speed = 0 musicallity"

That is false , Think of this Etude as a painting, if you stand to close you will not see the full picture, for example if you magnify a painting you will see dots and strokes. Hence if this Etude is playd slowly you will see the dots and strokes and not what it actually is, the style demands a cetin tempo, because of its repetative nature.
