Souvenirs D'Andalousie Discrepancy
on: November 21, 2005, 05:55:20 AM
I'm currently working on Souvenirs D'Andalousie by Gottschalk and I'm a bit confused
at differences between the score I'm working from (Dover) and a few recorded
performances I've heard.
In bar 173 the second note is written as a D natural, but in the performances
a D# is played. The figure repeats in bar 177. My instincts tell me the D# is probably
correct since it flows better with the phrases in the measures preceding and following.
If anyone can recommend a different edition to look at, or can double check the
correct note for me, I would appreciate it. I have looked the Library of Congress
copy and it's written the same as the Dover.
Thanks.

According to the net version going around (William Hall & son), it's a d#.

Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

flatfive is correct. Philip Martin plays d-sharp in his recording also. I suppose that d-natural is considered to be an error.
Here's the measure he's referring to (which is repeated four bars later - Key of D major):
