It depends on the age, maturity and schedule of the student. Some learn two instruments in tandem form the start. Others never learn another instrument because they dont have an interest that way. many come to piano as a second instrument having studied recorder or violin/flute etc and continue it. i generally wouldnt advise someone say at age 10/11 who is elementary on piano to take up another instrument as they are unlikely to have the time to commit to either and may end up becoming confused/frustrated. One of my first priorities as a teacher is to teach the fundamentals of music reading and good practice techniques so this can be applied to any instrument.
