Piano competitions
on: November 27, 2005, 12:07:03 AM
My teacher told me to search the internet for piano competitions that i can participate at. The problem is that we nearly don't have any small local competitions here in Egypt. So, she thinks that my next stop should be a piano competition abroad.....(dunno how but of course she knows better ! ;D) )

I am not a professional pianist. I am not doing a B.Mus in college or something, but my teacher treats me exactly as her conservatory students. So, i don't think i can fit into large scale competitions (van cliburn, tchaikovsky, rachmaninov, leeds,......etc.)  I don't know but if anyone can give me some advice on any competition that i can participate into, i will be so thankful.

I found this website https://www.afn.org/~afn39483/piano.html It contains so many competitions but most of them are just dummy links with nothing. Only e-mails are given, so should i e-mail all of them or do what??

Thanks

Where are you willing to travel to? Does it have to be competitions with significant prize money, or are you just going for the experience/exposure?

In Canada, there is a service club (of volunteer business people) called the Kiwanis Club. They run music competitions/festivals all over the country -- I think every large and many small Canadian cities have Kiwanis festivals. Here is the link for the one in London, Ontario Canada:

https://www.kiwanismusicfestivallondon.com/

If you go to google.ca and search on kiwanis music festival, you can find many more. Take note of the application deadlines, because they differ from place to place. The exciting thing about next spring's festival is that the national winner will have the opportunity to play a concerto at a huge music educators' convention in Toronto in 2007. You can read about it from the site I linked to.

If you come from Egypt then one of the closest countries would be Cyprus.

Try: https://www.steinwaycy.com/index.html

they should be able to give you more details about their competitions.

I think your best option would be to go to a neighboring country and participate in one of their national competitions. We had a pianist from Namibia competing (and doing quite well) in our competitions (South Africa) so it is possible. If transportation and accomodation costs is not a problem for you then it should be fine. Choose a country, then go look up specifically what they have to offer. It makes it easier than just doing a general internet search. How old are you? If you are younger, more possibilities would be open to you for youth competitions etc

All the best,
Danyal
