i tend to like music that pulls from the past into the present - ie bartok, poulenc, rachmaninov.  for bartok - a sort of classicism, for poulenc- renaissance and medieval reminsences, and for rachmaninov - the romantic era.  i like seeing a link - and not a direct cut - but am kind of tied to tradition.  to me, innovation doesn't have to mean something totally new, but sort of born out of the old.

Propably something be Schoenberg like String Quartet number 2 or Pianosuite.

Stravinsky must be mentioned too of course

The importance of "Metastasis" by Xenakis and some of Varece´s works is underrated today .

Not modern by some definitions, but the "Concord Sonata" by C.I.
