'Vers la flamme, Op. 72 (Towards the flame) was one of Scriabin's last few pieces for piano, written in 1914.

The melody of the piece is very simple, consisting mainly of just half steps down. However, the unusual harmonies and difficult tremolos create an intense, fiery luminance. This piece was intended to be Scriabin's eleventh sonata, however he had to publish it early because of financial concerns. Hence, the piece is only labeled a poem, rather than a sonata.

According to renowned pianist Vladimir Horowitz, Scriabin wrote "Vers la flamme" after a psychotic vision in which he witnessed the end of the world. The piece's title reflects the Earth's fiery destruction, as well as the constant emotional buildup throughout the piece leading, ultimately, "toward the flame".

The piece is approximately six minutes long.'

That recording is the best or this piece I have ever heard.

He plays it at home. 1974 I think. Also plays the Chopin Rondo Op16 whilst Mrs H Looks on.

Horowitz version of Verse le Flamme is rather poor imo.

Sofronitsky is much better. The piece is great, unique, powerful.

I just downloaded the Horowitz video of this piece a couple days ago and it is AWESOME.  I love the big chords around 5:29.  This piece sounds so evil it's cool.  I love how Horowitz makes wicked music sound even more wicked. It does sound like the end of the world.  I love how he gets right down to business when he says "ok, let's do it".  You can get this video from eMule.

Thanks stevie, but unfortunately it doesn't work  , I have trouble with .avi, and I can't seem to convert it, I used to be able to, when dinosaurs ruled the internet over 5 years ago. Oh well, thanks man; just happy to know this exists, something to look forward to....

I love this piece, and I have that Horowitz video too.  I believe it is called "Horowitz: A Reminiscence."  It is in 3 sections: 1st is a biography, 2nd is the Chopin Rondo Op. 16, 3rd some more live concerts. 

I considered learning it for a while, started working out sections.  But something always comes up and I have to put it aside.  It has some wacky syncopated 3 against 5 against 9 rhythms in the middle. 

To me, the middle sections with those complex rhythms seems the hardest to learn.  Also in the beginning the notes are so sparse, that you have to concentrate on counting to hold them for their full value.  The ending is not that bad actually and is easier than other sections to sight read.

i aklso cant play .avis, using most advanced version of real player. is there some other program that does it ?!?!?!?!?!?!??!
