Mozart Piano Concertos - Recommended recordings?
on: November 28, 2005, 04:06:31 PM
Dear All,

My dad asked me what i wanted for Christmas the other day and i've made a huge list of classical music i'd like to get hold of!

I'm not hugely familiar with the Mozart Piano Concertos - so can anyone recommend CDs of the concertos - and which recordings/pianists? There seems so much choice! I'm browsing on Amazon at the moment.

Also i'd like to ask for some CDs of Schumann's piano music and J.S Bach's keyboard music (i'm thinking perhaps Glenn Gould - but there is so much choice!) - so any recommended recordings/pianists?

Thaaaanks!  :-*

Oh and any recommended recordings of Beethoven piano concertos? I'm looking Vladimir Askenazy's at the moment...

well, i did complete 2/3 of a piano concerto class and here are my professor's recommendations:

mozart k 271 in E-flat: Bilson
mozart k 453 in G: Jando
mozart k 459 in F: Pollini
mozart k 466 in d minor: Argerich
mozart k 476 in C: Casadesus with the Cleveland orchestra (George Szell cond.)
mozart k 488 in A (Uchida, Vardi, Pollini)
mozart k 491 in c minor: Casadesus
mozart k 503 in C (Fleischer, Ashkenazy)

Casadesus has written some very fine cadenzas!  Murray Perahia has too.  those two pianists are my absolute favorites for Mozart.

also, he personally recommended Leon Fleischer for Beethoven conc. 1,2 and 3

i think there was a recommendation for Benjamin Frith for the Mendelssohn concerto #1, too.

My list: Mozart-Complete concertos:Mitsuko Uchida(Phillips), Alfred Bredndel (Phillips),
                                                         Andras Schiff (Decca)
-Rudolf Serkin (3 cd box-Sonny, individaual concertos for DG-Abbado)
                       -Mikhail Pletnev (2cd Virgin Classics)
-Emil Gilels (no.27 + Double concerto + Scubert Fantasia-with Elena Gilels
                                          on-DG)
-Aturo Bennedeti Michelangelli (DG- 2 cd on each are 2 concertos)
                       -Richter (Teldec-no.25 + Bach 2 concertos (D-major and g- major)
-Evgeny Kissin (nos.12, 20 and D-major Rondo-RCA Victor read seal)
                       -Clara Haskil (Deutche Grammophon-nos.13,20,19)
                       -Cliford Curzon(with Britten no.27-Decca)
                       -Muray Perahia (Sony)
                       -Robert Cadasesus
For Beethoven concertos I wouldn't recomend Askhenazy, he plays them very boring and industrial (like many other things...)

For complete sets-Bishop-Kovachevich(Phillips), Serkin(Telarc), Gilels(EMI), Rubinstein
                             (RCA)

Individuals-Glenn Gould (Sonny)
                 -Argerich (nos.1,2-Sinopoli, nos.2,3-Abbado-DG both)
                 -Richter (nos.1,3)
                 -Michelangelli(nos.1,3,5-DG)

Bach-the best pianists are Gould, Rosalyn Tureck, Andrasch Schiff, Angela Hewit, Richter, Pogorelich (English suites nos.2,3)

For Schumann everything you can buy by Richter is amazing!!
The same for Horowitz...and Argerich..... :)

I have to say Jenni  the ones I found interesting were Brendel, Schiff and Clara Haskill.  i did a project on the Mozart concertos and listened to 100's of recordings. There are so many good ones but for me these folks really understand the stylistic considerations and get at the clarity of these pieces.   Stephen Hough is quite interesting too and Dubravska Tomsic.  I personally was not so keen on the Russian interpretations but you may like them.  Argerich is always interesting but she tends to be one who i get out of the library for things when i want a breath of fresh air rather than one who i listen to as a model - all respect to her though she is a genius.  Maria Joao Pires has some very interesting ideas in Mozart - they tend toward the romantic but they often come off very well so its worth considering.  There are really too many recordings of these works to choose from.  My best advice would be go and find a shop with a listening booth and take a flask of tea and some sandwiches!!! ;D

Cheers pianowelsh - I am currently veering towards Brendel....

What do you guys make of Barenboim's recordings?

Brendel is fine, but I would opt for Andras Schiff (Decca).
