Barraque's Sonata
on: November 28, 2005, 05:44:24 PM
I've heard a lot about Jean Barraque's Sonata for Piano, but have never heard it before.  Has anyone heard it before?  How do you find it?

I'm so glad to see at least SOME interest in this sonata!

It really is a gorgeous piece if you're into post-serialist and avant-garde serialist music.  It's almost Debussian in how it uses timbre and color; more akin to say, Consollation from Boulez's Troisieme Sonate pour Piano than the technical and harsh Premiere or Deuxieme Sonatas.  The Barraque Sonate has a very mellow sound; much more accessible than most of his peers like Stockhausen and Babbitt.  As far as getting a recording I can upload the one I have in a couple days if you'd like, or you can buy it off of Amazon.  There is one really bad recording of it but I don't remember the pianist ><  I think the bad one was recorded by one of the Sorabji virtuosos.  Just make sure you don't buy that one XD

Wow, how many times I thought of starting this topic.

I don't think that was played by one of the Sorabji virtuosi.

You still want those De La Nuit sheets?

Hodges isn't a Sorabji virtuoso, he's a Finnissy virtuoso.

I believe the recording I sent was by Herbert Henck.

Is the one by Pi-Hsien Chen any good? The Boulez 3 is also on that CD.

I think that's the one I liked.  Anyways, can you upload the Sciarrino sheets?

I think some of the sh*t on the edges got cut off... proof it against a copy of the Gaspard.
